Mercedes-Benz used a single day to show investors two very different faces of the company: a laboratory full of prototypes and a showroom with features already shipping. The Stuttgart group unveiled research into displays built into vehicle glass and a high-voltage power converter for future electric cars, while at the same time confirming a Chinese-market cockpit update and a smartglasses tie-up with Meta. Neither announcement moves the numbers that matter most right now — the adjusted return on sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

That metric is where the investment case currently hangs. After cutting its guidance last week, the carmaker expects a margin of 2% to 3% for 2026, citing a tougher market environment in China and higher costs in the fourth quarter. Group revenue in the third quarter of 2026 came in at EUR 30.7 billion, with EBIT of EUR 1.77 billion — figures that frame the scale of the business but say nothing on their own about whether passenger-car profitability can be steadied.

Glass, Holograms and a 3 kW Converter

On the technical side, LED elements embedded in vehicle glass are designed to flash warnings and traffic information when needed. A separate holographic display projects content onto the windscreen. Both put information directly in the driver's line of sight, though they rely on different engineering approaches — one built into the pane itself, the other beamed onto it.

For future electric models, Mercedes presented a power converter that supports 800-volt applications and currently reaches up to 3 kW. According to the company, the unit suits both alternating-current and direct-current use, and could eventually enable bidirectional charging. That last capability remains a development prospect rather than a confirmed production feature.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

None of this translates into revenue yet. A research presentation is a different animal from the sales launch of a model equipped with the technology, and investors would be wrong to read a commercial contribution into it.

China Cockpit Ships, Meta Glasses Follow in 2027

The more tangible news came out of China, where the updated long-wheelbase E-Class launched yesterday. Its cockpit, developed by the local research team, integrates ByteDance's Doubao model into the virtual assistant, alongside Huawei HiCar and Apple CarPlay.

Separately, Mercedes and Meta announced that Meta smartglasses will be woven into the vehicle experience from early 2027, starting with models running MB.OS. Navigation, the Mercedes assistant, plus messages and calls, will be relayed through the glasses.

The distinction matters: cockpit functions already on the road sit alongside announced integrations and longer-horizon research. What counts for valuation is which of these approaches makes the leap from project to a concrete vehicle offering.

A Strategy Rewrite, a Severance Offer and a Trimmed Target

Back on the operational front, chief executive Ola Källenius said on 28 October that a broader strategy update covering 2030 and beyond will be presented next year. China is to remain a central pillar even as the group works to reduce its dependence on the market — a balancing act investors will want to see demonstrated rather than described.

Also announced on 28 October: a fresh voluntary severance programme for indirect areas in Germany, starting in December 2026. No quantifiable earnings improvement follows from it yet, but it offers a concrete checkpoint for how the organisation is being reshaped.

The cautious mood is reflected in analyst action. On 29 October, UBS cut its price target to EUR 42.50 from EUR 45.00 while keeping a "Neutral" rating — not a forecast of where the shares will trade, but a reminder that any recovery has to be weighed against substantial operating uncertainty.

Cash Flow Is the Second Front

Last week's downgraded guidance stretches beyond the car margin. Group EBIT is now expected to land at the prior-year level, and industrial free cash flow is seen well below the previous year. Investors therefore need to watch the ability to generate free funds as closely as profitability.

Mercedes-Benz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Add to that the temporary work stoppages Reuters reported yesterday at Mercedes-Benz sites, part of nationwide warning strikes across the metal and electrical industry. No specific earnings hit can be derived from them, which leaves the bigger question intact: are the announced changes enough to absorb the economic strain?

What December and Next Year Must Deliver

The bull case requires more than a polished presentation. If Mercedes manages the split in China — keeping the market's strategic weight while lowering reliance on it — and stabilises the car margin inside the guided range, the case that last week's cut marks the floor rather than the start of further downgrades gains traction.

The bear case is just as concrete. A longer drag from China combined with higher costs would keep earnings power under pressure even behind a coherently written strategy. December's severance programme is the first date to watch for evidence of execution; the wider strategy update follows next year and will be judged on how convincingly the company links China's importance to a lower dependency.

The question for shareholders, then, is not simply whether they believe in China. It is whether they trust Mercedes-Benz to deliver an operating stabilisation before the long-term repositioning can take effect. The margin, not the announcement, remains the yardstick.
