Micron's Memory Squeeze: Record Profits, a Taiwan Strike Vote, and $10 Billion in Research

Micron Technology shares closed Friday's European session at EUR 884.00, up 3.8% on the day, as a broad rally swept through the semiconductor sector. The catalyst came from Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan, who used the AI Infrastructure Forum in Santa Clara to warn that memory capacity is tightening and prices will keep climbing. Investors responded by piling into memory makers.
Tan's remarks carried weight because they describe a bottleneck rather than a sentiment shift. Limited supply, he said, is already delaying projects and complicating component procurement for mid-range and entry-level smartphones and laptops. He expects the shortage to intensify next year as additional production capacity fails to keep pace. Memory prices in some markets have already reached five to seven times their previous levels.
The stock's advance fits a much larger picture. Since the start of the year, Micron has gained 251%, a move driven less by fleeting consumer trends than by the massive capital programs of global cloud providers building out data centers for autonomous agents and generative models.
A Cycle That Refuses to Behave
Memory has long been the semiconductor industry's most notoriously cyclical business, defined by brutal oversupply and ruinous price declines. The current setup breaks with that pattern.
As the U.S. company approaches its fourth-quarter earnings release on September 30, the market is pricing in fundamental scarcity. South Korean rival SK Hynix, which controls roughly half the HBM market, does not expect supply and demand to reach equilibrium before 2030. Nvidia finance chief Colette Kress has already called memory prices extreme and anticipates further increases. What amounts to a cost burden for buyers shows up as exceptional financials for manufacturers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Across the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, Micron generated USD 79 billion in revenue, a 203% increase year over year. Net income climbed from USD 5.3 billion to USD 47 billion over the same stretch.
Hebel Positions and Analyst Targets
Can a fundamental boom of this scale still catch markets off guard? The behavior of institutional participants suggests many still underestimate the sector's earnings power. Interest in leveraged positions shows just how loaded expectations are heading into the quarterly numbers.
On the analyst side, that confidence shows up in ambitious price targets. The estimates reflect a belief that the data-center buildout will not hit a sudden wall, and that the memory market will for the first time surpass standard semiconductors by volume. The company remains, for investors, the purest barometer of real physical demand behind the global AI expansion.
Taiwan Talks and a Strike Threat
Operational reality is messier. In Taiwan, Micron entered a first mediation session Friday with local labor representatives over pay structures and bonus rules. Unions claiming to represent nearly 10,000 of the roughly 15,000 employees at the Taoyuan and Taichung sites have threatened a strike vote.
Workers want the existing bonus system replaced with a fixed 15% share of operating profit. Micron has announced special compensation for fiscal 2026 worth 35 to 68 months' pay for its Taiwanese manufacturing staff, but the union classifies that as a one-time payment and is demanding a permanent, transparent model. The company had previously rolled out a global compensation package for more than 60,000 employees that includes stock-based awards for the entire workforce for the first time.
$10 Billion for the Research Bench
Away from the negotiating table, Micron is pushing its technological positioning forward. On September 15, the company named Deirdre Hanford corporate vice president and president of Micron Research Labs. Hanford spent 37 years at Synopsys, including roles as chief security officer and co-general manager of the design group.
The research organization, established in August and headquartered in Boise, Idaho, is meant to secure long-term technology development. Micron plans to invest roughly USD 10 billion in these labs over the coming decade.
Even after the latest rally, the stock trades 20% below its 52-week high. The September 30 report will give market participants their first hard look at the financial condition behind a blockbuster prior quarter.
