Micron's Memory Supercycle Has Wall Street Fighting Over the Same Set of Facts

Micron's record revenue and AI-driven demand contrast with a 31% stock drawdown, as China competition and sector doubts weigh on sentiment.

Micron Stock Drops 31% Despite Record AI Memory Demand and 2027 Supply Tightness

The gap between what Micron Technology says about its business and what its share price does has rarely been wider. Management spent Monday telling investors at the KeyBanc Capital Markets Technology Leadership Forum that AI-driven demand for memory chips is tightening supply faster than the industry can add capacity — and that conditions in 2027 will be even tighter than this year, with strong pricing and deep customer demand running up against persistent capacity constraints well beyond that.

The stock, meanwhile, sits roughly 31% below its 52-week high. At the German market close on Monday, shares changed hands at €746.50, down 1.89% on the day and off 9.28% over the past month. The 52-week peak, reached in late June, now stands 32.37% away. That drawdown looks all the more jarring against the twelve-month return: 615.16%.

A stock caught between euphoria and skepticism

The tension is not hard to explain. Micron's own numbers are extraordinary. In the quarter ended May 28, 2026, the company posted record revenue of $41.46 billion — up from $23.86 billion in the prior quarter and just $9.30 billion a year earlier. GAAP earnings per share came in at $24.67. For the current quarter, management guided to $50 billion in revenue, plus or minus $1 billion.

Underpinning that outlook are 16 long-term supply agreements with data-center operators and automakers, covering roughly half of projected revenue and carrying financial commitments of $22 billion. The company also used last Friday to unveil a full PCIe Gen 6 memory solution with Microchip Technology, built around its 9650-NVMe SSD — described as the industry's first production-grade SSD of that generation, aimed squarely at AI and data-center workloads.

Yet the market's reaction to that news was muted at best. On August 4, the stock ticked higher in pre-market US trading on the Microchip partnership, which media reports framed as a sentiment lift for memory names broadly. A day later, the mood flipped: softer outlooks from SanDisk and Western Digital revived doubts about demand and pricing across the sector.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

The China factor keeps rattling investors

The most consistent source of pressure, however, has been competitive anxiety from China. On August 3, the stock fell 3.5% to $794.59 in US trading after a report about ChangXin Memory Technologies — the Chinese memory maker that Apple is reportedly testing for chips — reignited concerns about supply-side risk. Barron's had flagged elevated volatility in Micron shares on August 5, the same day Elon Musk drew attention to sharply rising memory prices.

The pattern is telling: news of potential Chinese competition hits the stock hard, while the company's own operational milestones tend to stabilize rather than lift the share price. The question for investors is increasingly not whether memory demand holds up — Micron itself seems in little doubt — but how durable its competitive position is against emerging Chinese manufacturers.

Two banks, two readings of the same cycle

That uncertainty has produced a rare public split among major Wall Street houses. Citi analyst Atif Malik cut his price target by 18% on Thursday to $1,150 from $1,400, while keeping a Buy rating. His reasoning: DRAM and NAND prices should peak in the second quarter of 2027, after which momentum fades. A cycle top with a timeline attached — not a crash scenario, but a warning for anyone treating the boom as perpetual.

Bank of America took the opposite view the same day, calling the recent pullback a buying opportunity on the grounds that AI-driven memory demand continues to support long-term growth. Just two days earlier, on July 21, BofA had added Micron to its US 1 List, the firm's roster of top-conviction picks.

Two research houses, one company, two nearly opposite interpretations of the same data. That divergence makes Micron something of a litmus test for the broader debate over whether AI infrastructure spending has legs — or is building toward a reckoning.

Insider sales add a wrinkle

One data point complicates the bullish narrative. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra sold thousands of shares on July 24 in multiple tranches at prices between roughly $906 and $966, executed under a trading plan established in January. Insider sales across July totaled about $44.2 million, according to media reports, with Mehrotra accounting for the lion's share.

Such plan-based sales are routine and legally unremarkable, and they say little about the company's prospects. Still, the optics are notable: while Bank of America talks about a buying opportunity and elevates Micron to its top list, the chief executive used elevated price levels to cash in. The two are not mutually exclusive — but they illustrate how differently insiders and external analysts can read the same tape.

What comes next

The next scheduled catalyst is the quarterly report, expected around September 29 per media reports. Until then, Micron remains what it has been throughout this AI cycle: a seismograph for how long scarcity can drive prices before competition and capacity catch up. The company's own message is unambiguous — the tightness is structural and extends past 2027. Whether the market chooses to believe it, and at what valuation, is another matter entirely.
