Micron shares drop 4.8% as Taoyuan workers vote 99% for strike authorization and CXMT chip advances add to AI financing worries.

A strike authorization vote at Micron Technology's Taoyuan facility in Taiwan has handed the memory chipmaker a fresh operational headache, arriving just as broader anxiety over artificial intelligence financing and mounting competition from China's CXMT combine to pressure the stock.

Shares of the US memory producer shed 4.8% in today's session, changing hands at EUR 845.20. The decline came as part of a sector-wide selloff that also dragged down Nvidia, Broadcom and Qualcomm, with investors rattled by reports of rapid technological advances at ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). Those developments have stoked fears that incumbent memory manufacturers could face intensifying competitive pressure. Micron's stock now sits 23% below its 52-week high.

Union Vote Signals Deep Frustration

At the Taoyuan site, organized workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action, with 1,994 members — 99% of those casting ballots — backing the authorization on October 7, according to Reuters. The dispute centers on the company's bonus system. No strike date has been set, but the union has announced a rally for October 19 and has floated the possibility of unannounced work stoppages should negotiations break down. Micron responded that it takes employee concerns seriously and intends to continue the dialogue.

For a globally integrated memory producer, the timing could hardly be worse. Semiconductor supply chains tolerate disruptions poorly, and any delay at Asian fabrication plants can ripple directly into shipment schedules and cost structures.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

A Market Growing Skeptical of AI's Price Tag

The unease extends well beyond labor relations. Growing doubts about how the entire AI infrastructure buildout will be financed have begun to weigh on sentiment. As long as capital for massive data center construction flowed freely, memory makers' production capacity struggled to keep pace with demand. Once questions arise about refinancing those enormous investment sums, euphoria gives way to calculated caution.

The technological lead in the memory segment is far from guaranteed, either. CXMT reported progress over the weekend on a denser memory chip architecture — a reminder of how quickly new challengers can close the gap and pressure established margins.

Analyst Targets and Market Reality Diverge

Roughly a week ago, D.A. Davidson raised its price target on Micron to $3,000 from $2,100, reaffirming its buy rating, with analyst Gil Luria behind the call. Rosenblatt Securities also lifted its target to $1,900 from $1,500. Yet the market has struck a decidedly more sober tone: the stock has retreated 9.0% over the past seven days, illustrating how sensitively investors now react to headwinds.

On the capital side, management has moved to shore up the share price. The board expanded its authorization for share buybacks to $35.16 billion. Repurchases under that resolution become available starting December 9, 2026, though the board has made no fixed purchase commitment.

Today's pullback is no isolated event. It reflects the convergence of macroeconomic skepticism with concrete site-level risks. When financing for the next investment cycle wobbles while labor disputes loom at key locations, even the leading memory producers must demonstrate how resilient their business models truly are beyond the pure industry hype.
