The site handles assembly and final testing of memory components, a joint undertaking with state partners carrying an investment volume of about USD 2.75 billion. Commercial output began in early 2026, and DRAM and NAND modules are already reaching global customers — Dell among the first recipients. According to Mehrotra, Sanand's capacity now exceeds total demand from India's laptop market. The operation supports more than 7,000 direct employees and over 3,700 patents in the country, and stands as the first large-scale project under the government's India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to cut the nation's heavy reliance on imported semiconductors.
Wafer fabrication remains elsewhere; Sanand covers the back-end packaging and quality checks. The broader expansion is meant to ease existing supply bottlenecks and spread production beyond traditional manufacturing hubs, with surging demand for server and data-center memory — driven largely by artificial intelligence applications — providing the tailwind.

Back at headquarters, Micron used Tuesday to unveil the world's first DDR5 RDIMM server module with 512 gigabytes of capacity. The part delivers transfer rates up to 9,200 megatransfers per second and cuts power consumption by more than 60 percent versus four separate 128-gigabyte modules — a direct answer to the electricity hunger of modern data centers. The technology also lets dual-socket servers scale to as much as 12 terabytes of DRAM.
AMD and Intel are already in active validation. Volume production is slated for the second half of 2027, which would open a high-margin market protected by steep entry barriers — provided the timeline holds.
The company paired the launch with a leadership appointment. Deirdre Hanford, who brings 37 years of industry experience at Synopsys, becomes vice president and head of Micron Research Labs, a unit slated to receive USD 10 billion in planned investment over the coming decade to steer the research arm toward future memory generations.
The Contract Question That Drives Everything
What ultimately determines whether these initiatives translate into durable earnings is the composition of Micron's long-term supply agreements, which total USD 100 billion. The pivotal issue is how much of that backlog is tied to high-margin specialty solutions versus standardized commodity memory.
Analysts downgraded the stock from buy to hold on September 8, after a 23 percent run, citing the closing of the prior valuation gap and lingering uncertainty over the mix between high-bandwidth memory, conventional DRAM and NAND. If the bulk of revenue proves bound to price-sensitive commodity products, the contract cushion loses much of its stabilizing power. A heavy HBM weighting, by contrast, would cement the company's pricing power.
Cyclical Exposure and a Timing Gap
Beneath the optimistic case lies a risk rooted in the traditional semiconductor cycle. The memory market has historically swung between abrupt gluts and steep price declines. Should demand for standard DRAM and NAND cool while industry capacity ramps, margin erosion becomes a real threat.

Wall Street Splits Ahead of the Print
Opinion among analysts is divided on how much upside remains after the long rally. TD Cowen stays in buy territory, pointing to sustained pricing power in memory modules. Goldman Sachs takes a more cautious stance with a hold rating, noting how far the memory cycle has already advanced.
The numbers due on September 30 will settle the debate for now. Consensus expects adjusted earnings per share of USD 31.14 on quarterly revenue of close to USD 50.42 billion — a massive jump from the year-earlier quarter. That report will deliver the hard evidence on whether operational reality keeps pace with the company's technological ambitions.
