Office workers who have spent a summer shifting desks to escape a blast of cold air will recognise the problem Midea set out to solve. Its VitaBreeze unit has now been recognised with the inaugural home&smart Innovation Award 2026, according to an industry report dated 19 September 2026, with the jury singling out the appliance's sensor technology and redesigned airflow.

The home&smart portal handed out innovation prizes across several categories for the first time in 2026. In the air-conditioning category, the panel chose Midea's VitaBreeze.

What tipped the decision was a set of features that go beyond simply lowering the temperature, putting user comfort and workplace health at the centre. Radar technology and a reworked approach to air movement proved decisive for the expert jury.

Radar keeps track of where people are sitting

Central to the awarded design is a set of radar sensors. These continuously measure the distance between the unit and the people in the room.

That data lets the control system adjust the airflow so that occupants are not blown on directly. In workplace ergonomics, avoiding a direct draught is considered an important factor in preventing muscle tension and irritation of the mucous membranes among employees.

By pairing distance measurement with intelligent control, the system is meant to distribute cooling throughout the room without creating uncomfortable air speeds close to the people using it. The technology responds to a common complaint about conventional air conditioners, which are often perceived as a nuisance when they are aimed straight at a seating area.

Micro-openings spread the air instead of blasting it

Mechanical air distribution mattered just as much to the jury as the sensors did. The appliance includes what is known as a Breezeless mode. Rather than channelling cool air into the room as a bundled jet through one large opening, the system relies on numerous micro-openings. Air passes through them and is finely dispersed, spreading gently through the space.

This approach sharply reduces the kinetic energy of the airflow. The result is an even temperature distribution without the usual cold spots. For people who stay seated at a desk for long stretches, the technique offers a way to keep cooling steady without accepting the downsides of classic ventilation.

Taking moisture out of the air without chilling the room

Another technical detail that drew attention during the award process is the ClimaBalance dehumidifying valve. Conventional dehumidification often comes with an unwanted drop in room temperature, whereas this valve is designed to lower humidity without cooling the room any further. That matters particularly during muggy summer months, when high humidity can curb performance at work while excessive cooling is experienced as unpleasant.

The whole system can also be controlled through a mobile application. Its integrated 'Drag and Flow' function lets users adjust airflows and settings flexibly from a smartphone or tablet, catering to the trend towards individually tailored workplace conditions.

For all the praise from the expert jury and the innovation prize, a comprehensive practical test of the Midea VitaBreeze had yet to be carried out as of the September 2026 reports. The award therefore rests primarily on an assessment of the technological innovations and their potential to improve indoor climate from an ergonomic standpoint.
