Netflix Bets on Indian Storytelling While Wall Street Questions the Payoff

Netflix has found a new well of stories in South Asia — but the timing of the announcement puts a spotlight on a nagging question: does spending more actually keep viewers watching?

The streaming giant unveiled a two-year arrangement with Indian platform hoichoi on Thursday that will bring Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions of new hoichoi series to Netflix subscribers. The deal goes a step beyond licensing, with both companies also planning original adaptations drawn from selected hoichoi stories. That second strand carries a lighter commitment than the language versions themselves, which are the subject of the announced streaming agreement. Investors would be wise to treat planned productions as intentions rather than revenue.

A Leadership Handover Looms Over the Content Push

The partnership lands in the middle of a personnel shake-up. Netflix named former Disney executive Peter Rice as Chief Content Officer on October 15, succeeding Bela Bajaria, who departs after nearly a decade at the company. Rice is due to start on October 26 — though one source dates his arrival to October 26, 2026. The appointment says nothing about who drove the hoichoi tie-up, nor does it signal a strategic pivot.

Media reports on October 14 also flagged roughly 1,000 job cuts at Netflix, about 6% of the workforce, as part of a restructuring. Fresh content initiatives and a leaner payroll are unfolding side by side.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Netflix?

The Numbers Behind the Noise

Tuesday's quarterly results provide the financial backdrop. Netflix booked revenue of $12.87 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year on year, according to Reuters. A second tally put the figure at $12.874 billion, a gain of 11.8%.

Growth, however, does not settle the advertising question. A wider content slate and higher ad income are separate matters, and the hoichoi deal does nothing to answer how Netflix monetizes its audience. The company trimmed its 2026 ad revenue forecast to roughly $2.7 billion from about $3 billion, citing the slower rollout of features within its advertising products. That explanation concerns execution in ad tech — a different issue from the viewer-retention critique now circulating on the sell side.

Two Downgrades, Two Different Worries

Needham cut Netflix from "Buy" to "Hold" on Wednesday following the quarterly figures, without issuing a price target. A day later, Wolfe Research moved from "Outperform" to "Peer Perform," reportedly arguing that heavier investment has not done enough to improve viewer engagement. The two calls point in different directions: Needham's reflects disappointment with the outlook, while Wolfe's focuses on the relationship between spending and audience loyalty.

Netflix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Other analysts trimmed their price targets on Wednesday while keeping buy ratings intact, so the picture is more nuanced than a wholesale negative reassessment. Caution on expectations does not, for every house, make Netflix unattractive.

What Management Is Saying

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on Tuesday, per Reuters, that Netflix intends to improve its content offering — an area central to the engagement debate. Whether bigger budgets translate into a more compelling slate is precisely what Wolfe Research views with more skepticism. For now, the hoichoi agreement adds a content angle without proving that the softer economic expectations have begun to brighten.
