Nokia's AI Momentum Meets a Tougher Cash Test as Analysts Split the Difference

Nokia's stock clawed back 2.8% yesterday after analysts pushed back on the sell-off that followed the company's quarterly report, with media coverage crediting that reassessment for the countermove. The rebound does not mean every concern has evaporated. It reflects a recalibration of how much the market should charge Nokia for its funding needs.

At the heart of the debate sits a gap investors must now weigh: operating results are climbing while the capital required to sustain them is rising too. Revenue for the quarter came in at EUR 5,154 million, and comparable operating profit jumped 35% to EUR 605 million, comfortably ahead of expectations. Yet the same report carried a more cautious message on cash.

Rosenblatt Trims Its Target but Keeps the Buy

Rosenblatt Securities captured that tension neatly. The research house cut its price target to $14 from $15 yesterday while reiterating its buy recommendation. Lower valuation multiples across comparable companies drove the reduction, the firm said, and its analyst described the preceding share-price decline as overdone.

The call effectively separates two questions: what valuation level the sector environment justifies, and how sharply the stock should react to Nokia's operating performance. A lower target does not have to mean a sell rating — here the more conservative valuation came explicitly alongside a positive investment view.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

Profit Growth, Meet a Bigger Capital Bill

Nokia left its 2026 comparable operating profit guidance untouched at EUR 2.1 billion to EUR 2.6 billion, a signal that management has not scaled back its full-year operating plan despite the added strain. The cash side of the ledger looks more guarded. The company lowered its assumption for conversion into free cash flow to 35%–55% on Thursday and raised planned working-capital investments by EUR 400 million.

That distinction matters for how the quarter should be read. A higher operating profit and a weaker conversion of that profit into free cash flow can occur at the same time. The income statement alone cannot answer how much financial headroom actually emerges — which is why the relief rally should not be treated as an all-clear.

The gap between the two measures of profitability deserves attention as well. Reported operating profit for the third quarter of 2026 was EUR 196 million, down 22% year on year — a stark contrast to the 35% advance in the comparable figure. That does not signal a deterioration across the whole business, but it does raise the bar for a clear financial delivery.

The AI Order Book Provides the Bull Case's Substance

Demand already gives the growth story real content. Revenue from AI and cloud customers reached EUR 631 million in the third quarter of 2026, up 123% from the year-earlier period. Orders from that same customer group climbed 118% year on year to roughly EUR 1.5 billion.

The thesis therefore does not rest solely on announced technologies — Nokia is already booking sales in this segment. Whether that momentum persists and converts into profitable cash generation is the open question. For the combined IP and optical business, Nokia expects growth of 25%–30% in 2027, a projection that supports the buy case but is not yet a reported result.

An expanded partnership with NVIDIA on AI-RAN opens another front, with AI applications and radio network functions set to run on shared platforms. Elisa, BT, Deutsche Telekom and Orange are testing the technology and preparing commercial validations or deployments; Elisa has already completed live-network trials in Helsinki. Such progress could broaden the long-term demand base, though it does not yet prove a durable profit contribution.

The Traditional Telecom Market Is the Counterweight

Barclays warns of a weak conventional telecom equipment market and sees no recovery in global telecom investment over the next three years. It cites falling radio access network spending in India and competition from Open RAN as drags. Nokia could thus post strong AI-customer growth while facing headwinds in its legacy business at the same time — and a dynamic segment does not automatically offset every strain elsewhere.

Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

AI and cloud orders also slipped sequentially from the prior quarter. Barclays said the decline matched expectations, but it tempers the notion of an uninterrupted, quarter-on-quarter rise in order intake. The bear case is not a wholesale rejection of the AI thesis; it is slower economic conversion set against persistent weakness in telecom demand. Add further cuts to cash flow guidance, and even high revenue growth would carry less conviction.

What to Watch Before Year-End

The next scheduled checkpoint is the full-year 2026 results on 28 January 2027, when investors can judge whether Nokia hit its confirmed profit guidance and how free cash flow developed. Barclays estimates AI and cloud orders at EUR 2 billion in the fourth quarter, and network operators are preparing commercial validations or deployments of AI-RAN for 2027.

Completion of the Infinera integration, targeted for the end of 2026, is another marker. Nokia puts estimated net synergies at EUR 200 million — a goal, not a completed step. Orders demonstrate demand, integration tests operational execution, and commercial trials probe new applications. All three ultimately converge on a single point: Nokia must show that AI growth translates into more reliable cash inflows. Until then, the quality of the growth will matter more than its pace.
