Novo Nordisk has spent the days leading up to its pivotal London investor event assembling a broad set of pipeline, regulatory and technological announcements — a flurry of activity that underscores the pressure the Danish drugmaker faces as it seeks to defend its obesity franchise against an increasingly aggressive Eli Lilly.

At the centre of the latest move is an acquisition of three early-stage programmes from US biotech Kallyope, a deal that pushes the company's portfolio beyond its traditional GLP-1 stronghold. The lead asset, a peptide dubbed K-554, is a non-incretin-based candidate currently in preclinical testing, with first-in-human Phase 1 trials slated for the second half of 2026. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Kallyope agreement came just a day after Novo struck a licensing and development pact with Orbis Medicines, a tie-up that carries milestone payments of as much as USD 1.4 billion for orally administered cardiometabolic macrocycles. Research chief Jacob Petersen has signalled that several additional candidates are expected to enter clinical development over the course of the current year.

Setbacks at Home Spur a Wider Search

The push to broaden the pipeline follows a series of recent disappointments in Novo's internal development roster. Among them: the discontinuation of a once-monthly GLP-1 candidate and the halting of a Phase 3 trial for ziltivekimab. A collaboration with Ascendis Pharma also came to an end, returning exclusive rights to TransCon metabolic programmes to the partner.

Meanwhile, competition in the global obesity market is heating up. Industry observers estimate the segment could swell to roughly USD 100 billion by the end of the decade, with Lilly pressing hard for share.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Two CHMP Endorsements Land in Brussels

Regulatory momentum has arrived in tandem with the pipeline news. On Thursday, the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use backed a marketing authorisation for FREHEMGO (denecimig) in haemophilia A for both adults and children. The therapy is the first FVIIIa mimetic to offer prophylaxis in a ready-to-use pen at intervals of once weekly, every two weeks, or once monthly.

Supporting data for that decision appeared the same day in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, where results from the Phase 3b FRONTIER5 study showed favourable tolerability following a direct switch from emicizumab to denecimig, along with sustained thrombin generation within the normal range. Novo plans to launch FREHEMGO in the first European countries in the fourth quarter of 2026, widening the rollout across the EU from early 2027.

A second positive opinion followed on Friday, when the CHMP recommended approval of the growth hormone Sogroya (somapacitan) for weekly treatment of children with idiopathic short stature. If the European Commission follows the recommendation — a decision is anticipated before year-end — Sogroya would become the first and only therapy specifically authorised for this indication in the EU.

AI Partnership and a Fresh Brand Identity

Beyond the clinic and the regulator, Novo has been reworking its technological and corporate foundations. A collaboration unveiled Wednesday with Anthropic aims to tackle drug-discovery challenges using artificial intelligence, streamline scientific workflows and speed up the development of new medicines. Two days earlier, the company rolled out a unified brand identity under the name "Novo," accompanied by the tagline "Lasting Health Starts Now."

Investors Await Monday's Verdict

All of these developments set the stage for the capital markets day in London on Monday, 21 September, where management will present updated strategic guidance and new medium-term targets. The stakes are considerable: the stock has shed 15% since the start of the year, and Friday's European close of EUR 37.58 — a modest 0.3% daily decline — left the shares roughly 31% below their 52-week high of EUR 54.86, reached at the end of January.

With investors hunting for credible signs of future growth, Monday's presentation is expected to clarify how Novo intends to hold its market leadership against a strengthening field of rivals over the medium term.
