Novo Nordisk closed out the trading week with a twin set of European regulatory wins, a fresh billion-dollar research alliance and a pair of clinical disappointments — a mixed bag that lands just days before the Danish drugmaker hosts its Capital Markets Day on 21 September.

The company's shares finished Friday at EUR 37.58, leaving the stock down 15% since the start of the year.

CHMP backs two candidates in as many days

Europe's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) threw its weight behind Sogroya (somapacitan) on Friday, recommending once-weekly dosing for children with idiopathic short stature and ongoing growth disturbances. The endorsement followed a Thursday opinion in favour of FREHEMGO (denecimig), a factor VIIIa mimetic cleared for adults and children with haemophilia A, including patients with inhibitors. Denecimig is designed for monthly, biweekly or weekly administration via a prefilled pen.

Supporting the haemophilia filing, results from the Phase 3b FRONTIER5 trial appeared Thursday in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. No thromboembolic events or hypersensitivity reactions were observed in patients who switched from emicizumab.

Oral cardiometabolic push adds Orbis to the fold

Alongside the regulatory progress, Novo Nordisk signed a drug-discovery and licensing agreement with privately held Orbis Medicines, according to Reuters. The deal carries a total value of up to USD 1.4 billion and centres on oral therapies for cardiometabolic disease. The structure includes upfront and milestone payments plus tiered royalties, and Novo Nordisk is making a strategic equity investment in Orbis as part of the arrangement.

Ziltivekimab takes a hit while semaglutide delivers

Not every pipeline update went Novo's way. On 7 September, the company halted two additional ziltivekimab studies in heart failure after an independent data monitoring committee concluded there was only a slim chance of a different outcome versus an earlier failed late-stage trial. A separate study in patients who have suffered a heart attack continues, with readouts expected in the first half of 2027.

The same day brought better news from the STEP Young late-stage trial of semaglutide. Among children aged six to under twelve who adhered fully to treatment, 40.4% were no longer classified as obese after 68 weeks, and the study met its primary endpoint for BMI reduction.

Conference slate and a rebrand in motion

Novo Nordisk will unveil further data from its cardiometabolic portfolio at EASD 2026 in Milan, scheduled for 28 September to 2 October. Since 14 September, the group has operated under the shortened name "Novo" in day-to-day business, paired with an internal strategy framework called "The Novo Way," while Novo Nordisk A/S remains the legal entity.

Buyback keeps chipping away

The share buyback programme continues to underpin the stock. On 14 September, Novo Nordisk disclosed the repurchase of 1,050,000 B shares for roughly DKK 304.4 million. More than 33 million shares have been retired since the tranche began in early February, part of a twelve-month authorisation worth up to DKK 15 billion.
