Novo Nordisk's Buyback Clears 10.5 Billion DKK as FDA Delay Clouds Denecimig Launch

Novo Nordisk has repurchased 10.56B DKK of B-shares under its 15B DKK program, as BMO trims its target on US share losses and Ozempic pressure.

Novo Nordisk has now repurchased 37,849,179 B-shares for a total of 10,558,876,422 DKK under a buyback program capped at 15 billion DKK, with the Danish pharmaceutical group active in the market during the trading week of 5 to 9 October. The figure, confirmed through 9 October, puts the company roughly two-thirds of the way through its authorized envelope.

The capital return comes at a moment when sentiment around the stock is anything but buoyant. At 34.00 euros, the share has shed 23 percent since the start of the year, and the buyback has become one of the few visible supports beneath a valuation that investors are openly questioning ahead of third-quarter results.

BMO Trims Target on US Share Losses

On Monday, BMO Capital lowered its price target on Novo Nordisk to 40 from 47 USD, keeping a Market Perform rating. Analyst Evan Seigerman pointed to a demanding comparison base from the third quarter of 2025 and to eroding US market share that is expected to weigh on Ozempic revenue in the third quarter of 2026.

That framing puts a single metric at the center of the debate: real volume growth in the United States against persistent pressure on realized prices. If overseas demand stays strong enough to offset that headwind, the recent valuation discount looks overstated. If the share loss in the core GLP-1 franchise hardens instead, medium-term growth assumptions will have to come down.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

A Regulatory Setback for Denecimig

Pipeline execution has its own complications. Roughly two weeks ago, the FDA extended its review of the marketing application for Denecimig in hemophilia A because remediation work is still ongoing at a manufacturing site. The agency flagged no problems with clinical efficacy or safety data, but named no new decision date.

Novo Nordisk has said the delay leaves its financial outlook for 2026 untouched and that it still aims for a US market launch in the first half of 2027. Even so, the episode illustrates how exposed the company is to additional slippage as it tries to open new revenue streams. A longer FDA wait combined with intensifying margin pressure in the US would leave the stock vulnerable to further markdowns.

Semaglutide's Reach Beyond Diabetes

The bull case rests partly on widening the indication spectrum. A subgroup analysis of 55 participants in the STEP UP trial found that among patients with a liver fat content above 5 percent, 88.5 percent in the pooled semaglutide group reduced that level below 5 percent after 72 weeks. Converting such clinical evidence into future label expansions would open market potential well beyond diabetes and obesity.

Optimists also take comfort from the current price. Trading 12 percent above its 52-week low of 30.25 euros, the stock already discounts substantial risk. Should third-quarter operating results beat muted expectations, that could mark the start of a recovery.

What Has to Hold

The conditions for a turn are narrowly defined. As long as the share defends its yearly low and the company exhausts its buyback volume as planned, the downside is cushioned on both fundamental and technical grounds. A stable path, however, requires that the upcoming third-quarter figures reveal no deeper cracks in the US growth story.

If Ozempic's revenue momentum keeps fading under the weight of a shrinking US share, even the repurchases are unlikely to arrest a downtrend. The next strategic milestone is clearing the manufacturing deficiencies behind Denecimig to secure the targeted US launch in the first half of 2027 — and until operating margins for the third quarter are confirmed, patience is the more defensible position.
