U.S. regulators have pushed back their review of Novo Nordisk's hemophilia A candidate Denecimig, with the FDA citing ongoing remediation work at a manufacturing site as the reason for the delay. The agency did not attach a new decision timeline, though it raised no concerns about the efficacy or safety data submitted for the drug, according to the company.

The Danish drugmaker said the holdup will not alter its financial guidance for 2026 and continues to target a U.S. launch in the first half of 2027, subject to approval. Even so, the setback casts a spotlight on the operational strain running through Novo's production network, where demand for its established weight-loss treatments is already stretching capacity and newer therapeutic areas demand exacting regulatory precision at manufacturing plants.

A Bruising Year on the Exchange

Investors have had little to celebrate. Novo Nordisk shares ended Friday at EUR 33.06, down 0.8% on the day, extending their year-to-date decline to 25%. Sentiment had already cooled in September, when the company's capital markets day left the market underwhelmed. Press reports at the time pointed to Eli Lilly's competitive pressure, looming patent expirations on semaglutide and unanswered questions about future pricing power as the chief sources of skepticism.

Against that wary backdrop, management is leaning on external deals to broaden a pipeline that currently rests heavily on existing blockbusters. On September 29, Novo secured worldwide rights outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to an experimental oral candidate from Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. The agreement covers the GLP-1/GIP agonist HRS-1596 and carries a USD 300 million upfront payment, with milestone payments that could lift the total value to as much as USD 2.6 billion — Novo's second GLP-1 licensing pact with a Chinese partner.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Oral Therapies Move to the Forefront

Fresh data have reinforced the oral strategy. At the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting on September 30, researchers reported that patients switching from injectable treatments to oral semaglutide shed an average of 4.1% of their body weight over three months. Novo says five oral treatments are now in development.

CEO Mike Doustdar told Reuters that weight-loss pills could capture as much as half of the global obesity market by 2030. In comments to the Financial Times, he also left the door open to a future direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange in place of the company's current depositary receipts, while making clear that no active discussions on the matter have taken place since he took the helm.

Longer-range ambitions were laid out in September as well. By 2030, Novo aims to establish more than five products with blockbuster status and reach over 60 million patients worldwide, while expanding manufacturing capacity enough to give ten times as many people with obesity access to oral GLP-1 therapies. The company noted those targets do not constitute a financial forecast.

With Denecimig now pushed toward the first half of 2027, one piece of the U.S. product lineup has shifted later. As long as the clinical data remain intact, attention will center on how quickly Novo can clear the regulatory findings at its production facilities.
