Novo Nordisk shares climbed 2.7% on Friday, lifted by a sector-wide glow after Eli Lilly raised its full-year outlook on the back of surging demand for weight-loss drugs. But the gain says more about the mood surrounding the obesity market than about Novo Nordisk's own performance — a distinction that matters as the Danish drugmaker heads into a packed November calendar.

Lilly's third-quarter revenue grew 39% to $24.4 billion, reports said Thursday, and the company now expects full-year sales of $91.0 billion to $92.0 billion. That buoyed sentiment across the sector, including Novo Nordisk's stock. Yet a rival's upgraded guidance is no proxy for Novo Nordisk's own results, and the friendly share-price reaction has not pre-empted the test still to come.

The 4 November print comes first

Novo Nordisk will publish results for the first nine months of 2026 on 4 November, putting its own operating trajectory back in the spotlight on Wednesday. Investors face two separate questions: Lilly's raised forecast describes a competitor's momentum, while Novo Nordisk's figures must show how the company is holding its ground in the same market. Optimism about demand at a rival does not translate into evidence of Novo Nordisk's own commercial success.

Complicating the competitive picture, a US judge on 26 October rejected Novo Nordisk's bid to temporarily halt Lilly's advertising for weight-loss medicines. According to Reuters, the ruling did not resolve the underlying dispute over allegedly misleading marketing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Clinical slate adds a second dimension

Once the accounts are out, attention shifts to the scientific stage. At the AASLD Liver Meeting in Denver from 5 to 9 November, Novo Nordisk plans twelve contributions covering clinical and real-world data on semaglutide as well as efruxifermin, a compound still in development. The congress offers a different lens than the financial reporting: where the numbers document commercial progress, the presentations speak to the medical profile of the portfolio and its pipeline candidates.

Presentations on CagriSema and real-world data on the Wegovy tablet are also slated for ObesityWeek, running 14 to 17 November. Those contributions may sharpen the picture, but announcements are not the same as published results.

Reading the CagriSema figure carefully

One clinical data point already deserves a close reading. On 20 October, Novo Nordisk reported post-hoc analyses of the REDEFINE 1 study: among women with overweight or obesity, CagriSema was associated with an average weight loss of 25.0% after 68 weeks. The caveats are essential. The analysis assumed adherence to treatment, it was conducted retrospectively, and it applies to the specified participant group. The number therefore cannot be read as an unrestricted statement about everyone treated.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

That finding adds a concrete clinical anchor to the financial picture without substituting for the upcoming results or for an assessment of the further analyses still to be presented. For now, the nine-month figures remain the central proving ground — the company's own yardstick against which the recent burst of sector optimism must be measured. Lilly's tailwind explains Friday's move; Novo Nordisk's own financial and study data will determine what comes next.
