Novo Nordisk's Korean subsidiary filed a formal reimbursement review request for its obesity drug Wegovy with the country's Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service on Monday, a move aimed at widening patient access to the in-demand treatment in one of Asia's more lucrative pharmaceutical markets.

The filing lands at a delicate moment for the Danish drugmaker. Its shares closed yesterday at EUR 33.97, down 1.7%, and have now shed 23% since the start of the year. Today the stock is trading at EUR 33.99, off a further 1.6%. Investors have grown cautious ahead of the company's third-quarter report, with consensus earnings-per-share estimates trimmed over the past month.

Buyback Program Nears Its Ceiling

While the Korean application works its way through the regulatory pipeline, Novo Nordisk continues to lean on its own balance sheet to support the share price. Under a repurchase program launched on 4 February 2026 with a ceiling of up to DKK 15 billion over twelve months, the company bought back an additional 1,245,000 B-shares between 5 and 9 October. Cumulative purchases through 9 October now stand at 37,849,179 B-shares for a total consideration of DKK 10,558,876,422 — more than two-thirds of the authorized budget already deployed.

Sentiment Soured After Capital Markets Day

The buybacks are unfolding against a backdrop of mounting investor skepticism. A capital markets day on 21 September left market participants cold, as management failed to present concrete near-term measures to stabilize revenue and restore the company's earlier growth trajectory. Lower US pricing and intensifying competition in the GLP-1 segment have added to the pressure.

Domestic challenges have compounded the picture. At the end of September, competitor 2care4 introduced the oral Wegovy pill to the Danish market through parallel imports, beating Novo Nordisk to the punch on its home turf, according to trade publication Dagens Pharma.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Regulatory setbacks have also piled up. Roughly two weeks ago, the FDA delayed its review of Denecimig, a hemophilia A treatment, because remediation work at a manufacturing site remains ongoing. The US agency did not flag deficiencies in clinical efficacy or safety data, but no new decision timeline has been set. Novo Nordisk said the delay does not affect its 2026 financial outlook and continues to target a US launch in the first half of 2027 should approval come through.

Distribution efforts took a separate hit when a fine of DKK 45,000 plus VAT from Danish institution Enli, handed down roughly three weeks ago, prompted the company to halt a partnership with Falck supporting Wegovy patients in its then-current form.

Ozempic's US Momentum Is the Swing Factor

For the fundamental case, one variable now outweighs all others: whether Ozempic's revenue growth can offset eroding US market share. North America has powered Novo Nordisk's ascent in recent years, and any meaningful slowdown there — particularly if rivals keep gaining ground — would call the company's entire growth premium into question. The upcoming third-quarter figures must demonstrate that semaglutide sales can expand despite a demanding year-earlier comparison. A weakening in that core earnings engine would deal a heavy blow to the valuation of the broader portfolio.

BMO Capital recently cut its price target on Novo Nordisk to USD 40, citing the tough prior-year comparison and shrinking US market share for Ozempic in the third quarter of 2026.

Korea Offers a Path to Broader Demand

On the optimistic side of the ledger, new regional markets could unlock additional demand. Should the Korean review result in official reimbursement that meaningfully reduces patients' out-of-pocket burden, Wegovy could gain broad acceptance in another Asian market. Successful expansion of approvals and coverage outside North America would lessen the company's dependence on the US healthcare market and bolster confidence in its global growth strategy.

If the quarterly report confirms that worldwide volumes remain robust and US share losses are milder than feared, the stock would regain solid fundamental footing. In such an environment, the ongoing buybacks would deliver their full stabilizing effect by tightening the free float of B-shares and underpinning per-share metrics.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Reimbursement Is No Sure Thing

The downside risk is equally real. The Korean filing offers no guarantee of commercial success: whether Wegovy actually enters the reimbursement system, and how much financial relief patients would receive, remains unresolved. If cost-coverage negotiations fail or bureaucratic procedures drag on, the hoped-for demand boost in Asia could evaporate.

Additional headwinds from the US could further weigh on sentiment. A softening of Ozempic revenue in the third quarter — driven by the demanding year-earlier base and US share losses — might deepen investor doubts. Should the upcoming report show margin pressure overwhelming international gains, further downward revisions to earnings estimates would be on the table.

A Directional Decision Looms

Investors face a fork in the road that is about to be resolved. As long as Novo Nordisk can show that international volume growth is absorbing US share losses and that global demand for semaglutide products holds up, the multi-billion-krone buybacks will cushion pullbacks and leave room for a later recovery. If Ozempic's revenue momentum instead rolls over and management confirms an accelerating margin decline in the US business, the broader downtrend could resume. The next decisive date is the third-quarter earnings release. Before taking new positions, investors would be wise to wait and see whether that report justifies or refutes the recent cuts to profit expectations.
