Novo Nordisk Wins the Quarter but Not the Upgrade: Jefferies Holds Fire After Guidance Lift
Published on 11/05/2026 at 12:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deNovo Nordisk gave investors plenty to cheer on Tuesday — a 4.8% share price gain, a quarterly beat and a brighter full-year outlook — yet the loudest takeaway from the sell side was a shrug. Jefferies reaffirmed its "Hold" rating and DKK 275 price target, a signal that a single strong quarter, however welcome, is not enough to flip the narrative.
The Danish drugmaker's third-quarter 2026 report showed adjusted sales of DKK 79.2 billion, up 4% at constant exchange rates. Adjusted operating profit outpaced the top line comfortably, climbing 27% at constant currencies to DKK 31.72 billion. The Wegovy pill contributed DKK 5.39 billion in revenue. Reuters characterised the overall results as better than expected.
A Guidance Range That Still Cuts Both Ways
Alongside the numbers, Novo Nordisk raised its 2026 forecast for adjusted sales growth and adjusted operating profit growth. Both measures are now seen at between -2% and +2% at constant exchange rates, an improvement on the prior range, which had spanned a decline to flat performance.
The nuance matters. The new band reopens the door to growth but keeps a contraction firmly in play, so the upgrade is not the same as a declaration that Novo Nordisk is back on a growth trajectory. It is also a full-year figure, distinct from the single-quarter surge in operating profit — the two should not be blended into one headline growth rate.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Jefferies acknowledged as much, noting that consensus estimates could rise because the improved outlook sits above prior expectations. Higher sales and earnings forecasts may well follow. What the broker did not do was translate that into a more favourable investment verdict, making its response noticeably more muted than the market's.
The Next Catalyst Is Already on the Calendar
Attention now shifts to ObesityWeek 2026, running 14–17 November in Washington, D.C. Novo Nordisk announced on 29 October that it will present 26 scientific abstracts at the event, covering data on CagriSema and the Wegovy pill among other topics.
Those presentations could give investors fresh evidence with which to assess the portfolio. The announcement itself, however, does not pre-empt the findings — it is a date to circle rather than a new efficacy result.
Legal Headwinds and a Boardroom Shuffle
One legal constraint remains unresolved. According to Reuters, a US judge on 26 October rejected Novo Nordisk's request for a preliminary injunction against advertising for Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Mounjaro. The ruling did not address the merits of the misleading-advertising claims, so the dispute is far from settled.
Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Separately, Novo Nordisk announced a change at the top of its finance function. Luigi La Corte, currently CFO of Galderma, has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Karsten Munk Knudsen will leave the company at year-end after 27 years.
That leadership transition is an additional corporate development rather than a demonstrated driver of the share price move. For investors weighing the stock, the stronger quarterly figures and the prospect of analysts revising estimates upward remain the central considerations — and Jefferies has made its position clear: an operational surprise on its own does not yet justify a buy.
