Novo Nordisk Wins Twin EU Backing for Growth Drugs as Pipeline Setbacks and Rebrand Frame Monday's Strategy Day

European regulators handed Novo Nordisk two favorable opinions within 48 hours, cushioning a rough stretch in late-stage research and setting the stage for a capital markets day that will lay out where the Danish drugmaker goes next.
The CHMP, the EMA's human medicines committee, backed once-weekly Sogroya (somapacitan) on Friday for treating children in Europe with idiopathic short stature and persistent growth failure. A final European Commission decision is expected before the year is out. The nod came a day after the same panel recommended approval for FREHEMGO (denecimig), a hemophilia A therapy for adults and children — with or without inhibitors — that offers flexible dosing intervals.
A Mixed Clinical Scorecard
The regulatory wins land against a backdrop of uneven late-stage results. On September 7, Novo reported data from the STEP Young phase 3 trial of semaglutide: among children aged six to under twelve who stayed fully adherent to treatment, 40.4% were no longer classified as obese after 68 weeks. The study met its primary endpoint for BMI reduction.
The same day brought less welcome news. Citing Reuters, Novo halted two additional trials of ziltivekimab in heart failure after an independent data monitoring committee saw only a slim chance of a result diverging from an earlier, failed late-stage study. A separate trial in patients who had suffered a heart attack continues, with readouts expected in the first half of 2027.

Partnerships to Broaden the Pipeline
To widen its future treatment options, Novo is leaning on outside deals. On Thursday, Reuters reported a research and licensing agreement with Orbis Medicines worth up to $1.4 billion, centered on oral approaches to cardiometabolic disease. The pact includes upfront and milestone payments, revenue sharing, and a strategic equity stake in the privately held partner.
Novo will also put its cardiometabolic portfolio in the scientific spotlight at EASD 2026 in Milan, scheduled for September 28 to October 2, where it plans to present new data.
Rebrand and Culture Push
Organizational changes are running alongside the research activity. Since September 14, the company has used the shortened name "Novo" in day-to-day operations and rolled out an internal strategy called "The Novo Way," emphasizing customer focus, competitiveness, clarity, and integrity. The legal name Novo Nordisk A/S remains unchanged.
According to Reuters, CEO Mike Doustdar urged staff on Tuesday to sharpen their customer focus as the company works to regain ground in the obesity drug market. Further details on the business direction are due September 21 at the Capital Markets Day.
Market Reaction Muted
Investors took the recent flow of news in stride. The stock closed Friday at EUR 37.58, a modest 0.3% daily decline, bringing year-to-date losses to 15%.
