Nvidia's $17.2B SpaceX valuation marks a $3.8B write-down, highlighting risks of its ecosystem financing strategy amid trimmed Ohio guarantee.

The number that tells the real story of Nvidia's transformation isn't its soaring revenue or its market-beating stock performance. It's a single line item buried in its books: a $17.2 billion valuation for its stake in SpaceX.

That marks a roughly $3.8 billion write-down from the ~$21 billion the position was carried at as of the end of the second quarter. The internal share price of the rocket company has slipped, and Nvidia is absorbing the consequences across its 122.8 million Class A shares. The markdown is a blunt reminder that the chipmaker's evolution from pure semiconductor vendor into financier of its own ecosystem carries real balance-sheet risk — the kind that becomes impossible to wave away once a privately held, marked-to-market investment loses value.

A Portfolio Built on Strategic Bets

The SpaceX holding is just one piece of a much larger mosaic. A 13F filing for the period ending June 30 revealed a total portfolio of $63.4 billion, up sharply from $18.4 billion previously. Intel and SpaceX alone account for more than three-quarters of that sum. The Intel position has ballooned from a $5 billion investment twelve months ago to roughly $30 billion today.

The SpaceX stake traces its origins to an investment in xAI that was converted into shares of the space company following its merger. Since the June initial public offering, the position has drifted lower — now worth only around $17 billion after the share price declined from its June 30 level.

For Nvidia, these aren't passive holdings. Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX intends to build exclusively on Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin architecture. That strategic lock-in, rather than mark-to-market gains, is arguably the true value of these stakes: they secure future demand for the company's chips.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Ohio: A Guarantee Trimmed, Not a Retreat

The SpaceX write-down arrived in the same week that Nvidia scaled back its financial guarantee for the joint data center project with OpenAI in Ohio. Media reports indicate the commitment has been cut from a previously discussed $250 billion to less than $120 billion, driven by investor concerns over excessive risk concentration.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Nvidia reduced its investment obligation for the first phase of the Ohio campus — roughly 5 gigawatts of a project ultimately envisioned at 10 gigawatts and over $500 billion. Reuters suggested a revised deal could be signed as early as this weekend.

Reading this as a loss of confidence in OpenAI would be a mistake. Nvidia remains embedded in the infrastructure being developed by SB Energy and committed since September 2025 to supplying at least 10 gigawatts of its own systems, with potential participation of up to $100 billion. The trimmed guarantee looks more like a renegotiation of who bears what risk than an exit.

The timing is telling. On August 10, Nvidia joined Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR in unveiling a platform designed to mobilize more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure. CEO Jensen Huang has indicated Nvidia would backstop up to 25 percent of that — roughly $125 billion. His framing: "In AI, compute is revenue." The company isn't shedding risk; it's redistributing it across a broader, Wall Street-funded structure.

The Operational Engine Keeps Humming

Amid the portfolio drama, the core business continues to deliver. Networking revenue surged 199 percent year-over-year in the first fiscal quarter to $14.8 billion, powered by demand for Spectrum-X and InfiniBand platforms. That's the kind of hard-number reassurance that matters to investors — actual demand, not valuation promises.

Less reassuring were two geopolitical developments. Ukrainian military intelligence claims it found an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX module inside a Russian cruise missile variant called "Monochrome." Nvidia responded that the hardware is a consumer product, not sold to Russia and not designed for military use. Separately, the U.S. Commerce Department is reportedly preparing rules that could require Nvidia and AMD to seek pre-approval for large shipments exceeding 200,000 accelerators.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Skeptics Have Their Case

Not everyone is convinced the model holds. Investor Steve Eisman warns the entire AI boom rests on just two customers — OpenAI and Anthropic — which together drive roughly 70 percent of AI-related revenue at Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Oracle. Michael Burry has taken public short positions against Nvidia and semiconductor stocks. Goldman Sachs puts unstarted hyperscaler leasing commitments at around $1 trillion. Insider selling at Nvidia reached $767.2 million within 90 days.

The Market's Verdict — For Now

The stock closed Friday at €194.74, just 3.8 percent below its 52-week high and 39 percent above its yearly low. Year-to-date, shares are up 22 percent. Investors appear to be weighting operational strength more heavily than balance-sheet exposure — at least for the moment.

That confidence faces its test on August 26, when Nvidia reports quarterly results and must deliver on a revenue forecast of $91 billion, plus or minus 2 percent. The question hanging over that report isn't just whether the numbers land — it's whether Nvidia's dual role as chip supplier and infrastructure investor can keep working without the two roles colliding.
