Nvidia's Balance Sheet Gets a Vote of Confidence, but the Power Grid Has a Say Too

Nvidia gained 2.6% as Anthropic's filing lifted AI stocks. Morgan Stanley named it top pick, but power and output limits persist.

Nvidia shares climbed 2.6% yesterday, and the immediate trigger had nothing to do with Nvidia itself. Reuters attributed the sector-wide lift to Anthropic's publicly filed stock exchange application, which rekindled investor appetite for AI infrastructure plays. That tailwind carried into a stock already buttressed by supportive analyst coverage — yet the same day brought reminders that electricity supply and manufacturing capacity could cap how far the growth story runs.

Morgan Stanley named Nvidia its preferred semiconductor pick, according to media reports. In the same breath, the bank raised its estimate for the net power supply shortfall facing American data centers in 2026–28 to 38 GW, up from 33 GW previously. Barclays analyst Thomas O'Malley, meanwhile, stuck with his buy rating and a $275 price target. The two houses reinforce the bullish case from different angles: one ties its stock selection directly to data-center electricity demand, the other simply reaffirms its positive view on the shares.

Financing Ambitions Meet Delivery Realities

The demand side is not in question. Reuters reported on October 20 that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent together ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards, with a combined list price above $35 billion. Nvidia told customers it could not guarantee full fulfillment because demand outstripped planned production. That list value, in other words, must not be conflated with secured revenue.

On the capital side, Meta announced yesterday an equity raise of up to $95 billion to fund its AI expansion. Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom have expressed interest in jointly purchasing Meta Class A shares worth up to $5 billion in total, Reuters reported. For Nvidia, this adds a fresh dimension to its AI infrastructure business — potentially participating in the financing of a company scaling its AI activities. No investment has been confirmed; what was reported is interest, not a completed subscription.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Other financing structures are taking shape in parallel. SpaceX said yesterday that an Apollo-affiliated entity would buy AI chips and server hardware and lease it to SpaceX, under an agreement involving repayment installments totaling roughly $40 billion. Reuters had previously reported that SpaceX was seeking financing to purchase Nvidia chips. The arrangement highlights how external capital providers are becoming essential to large AI ventures — but it does not equate to a confirmed Nvidia order. Financing creates the conditions for procurement; it does not yet prove corresponding revenue at Nvidia.

Supply-Side Plans Take Shape

Nvidia has announced an expansion of its own. On October 21, at GTC Berlin, the company presented plans with supply chain partners to broaden global manufacturing capacity for accelerated computing platforms and AI factories.

Against that, the gap between demand and deliverability remains wide. The Chinese orders illustrate the point: Nvidia's message to customers was that demand exceeded planned output. Willingness to finance and production capacity now sit side by side — the expansion plans address supply, while the Meta and SpaceX financing models concern the capital base of major AI projects.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What matters for sizing up Nvidia, then, is not the volume of investment in the AI space alone. It is which projects actually get built and how much demand Nvidia can serve. Yesterday's gain reflects fresh optimism, not the resolution of existing bottlenecks.
