Nvidia's Discount Multiple Meets a Product Offensive — and a Funding Test

Nvidia unveiled OpenShell for enterprise AI agents and kept Goldman's buy rating, while its fiscal 2027 P/E sits at 23 versus a 33.4 five-year average.

Nvidia used its Berlin GTC stage this week to push deeper into the software layer of enterprise AI, unveiling OpenShell, a reference architecture for building, running and monitoring AI agents across corporate infrastructure and decentralized systems. The pitch extends well past raw compute: OpenShell is designed to let companies set and enforce governance rules over how those agents behave, tying Nvidia's hardware and software into day-to-day workflows rather than selling chips alone.

The partner roster Nvidia attached to the architecture spans model developers, cloud providers and enterprise software vendors — Anthropic, AWS, Cisco, Microsoft, OpenAI and SAP among them. That breadth signals genuine interest in the platform, though interest is not the same as revenue. Nothing in the announcement establishes a specific contribution to Nvidia's top line.

OpenShell anchored a broader slate of Wednesday news. Nvidia added a reference humanoid, datasets and robot-learning updates to its Isaac robotics platform, while Agile Robots separately showed a humanoid reference design built on Isaac GR00T and Jetson Thor. In healthcare, the company disclosed work with the UW Medicine Institute for Protein Design on an open protein-design model, and Siemens Healthineers is using Nvidia technology to advance adaptive radiation therapy. Different fields, one common thread: Nvidia is embedding itself in concrete workflows rather than shipping components.

Goldman Keeps Its Rating, Not Its Excitement

Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its buy rating and $300 price target following CEO Jensen Huang's Berlin keynote, saying the presentations supported its view that AI adoption is tracking to plan. The bank nonetheless flagged limited near-term impact on the share price — a reminder that technical milestones do not convert automatically into short-term gains.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The stock's next move came from elsewhere. On Thursday Nvidia slid alongside other AI names under selling pressure, with media reports pointing to worries about the financing costs of data centers and AI chips. Product momentum and funding conditions, in other words, are separate variables in the valuation equation.

A Cheaper Multiple, Built on Bigger Numbers

On the valuation side, the picture has shifted. An analysis published Thursday puts Nvidia's price-to-earnings ratio for fiscal 2027 at 23, against a five-year average of 33.4 — a meaningful discount to its own history.

The arithmetic behind that gap matters. In the first half of fiscal 2027, Nvidia's revenue climbed 96% to $177.8 billion. Analysts project earnings growth of 71% for Nvidia next year, versus 16% expected across the S&P 500. High earnings estimates are what compress the multiple; low multiples do not produce high profits. Anyone judging the stock on that ratio has to scrutinize the forecasts underneath it, because a modest-looking P/E built on hefty future earnings loses its meaning if those earnings disappoint.

Competition adds a second layer of scrutiny. Amazon has introduced a software tool that lets its Trainium AI chips run code in the most widely used AI programming language without modification, and Alphabet now sells its own AI chips directly to businesses. Neither development threatens Nvidia's position imminently — Amazon still buys Nvidia chips — but a growing market does not guarantee unchanged market share.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

November 18 Is the Next Reckoning

The quarterly report on November 18 offers a concrete test. For the third quarter of fiscal 2027, Nvidia has guided toward revenue of $108 billion at the midpoint. Reported sales will matter, but so will any signal on forward demand.

A discounted multiple is an argument, not a substitute for proof that the business can keep clearing the bar it has set for itself.
