Nvidia's Order Book Is Full; Its Delivery Schedule Is Another Matter

ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent placed $35B+ in RTX PRO 5500 orders, but Nvidia can't guarantee delivery as demand outpaces planned output.

Three of China's largest technology firms have placed orders for more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 units, a combined list value north of $35 billion, according to a Reuters report dated October 20. ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent are the buyers. The catch: Nvidia has told customers it cannot guarantee it will fill those orders, because demand is running ahead of planned production.

That gap between order intake and deliverable output is the hinge on which the Nvidia story now turns. A list value is not revenue. Demand only becomes a durable growth driver once manufacturing keeps pace with it — and on that front the company is still laying groundwork rather than booking finished capacity.

Money for Substrates, Not for Certainty

Reuters reported Thursday that Samsung Electro-Mechanics is set to receive investments worth 3.7 trillion won from Tesla and Nvidia, earmarked for building advanced chip-substrate plants. Read carefully, this is a financing plan, not production capacity that exists today. It signals work on the supply side without constituting any commitment to fulfill the Chinese orders described above.

Memory tells a similar story of demand running hot. Speaking to CNBC at GTC Berlin on Thursday, Jensen Huang said he does not expect an oversupply in 2029 and sees memory requirements continuing to climb. That is a demand forecast, not proof that supply is secured.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Prefab Modules Aim at the Calendar

Nvidia's answer to the time problem in AI infrastructure arrived Wednesday in the form of DSX POD, a modular reference design for AI data centers built on Vera Rubin and developed with partners. Factory-integrated units could cut provisioning at prepared sites from six months to as little as 14 days, according to the company.

The qualifier matters. Nvidia is not promising a full data center built in a fortnight — the concept addresses deployment of integrated systems at sites that are already prepared. Faster installation and complete site development are different things, and investors should keep them apart. Partners are targeting worldwide shipments from early 2027, so the practical rollout remains a future step; the time saving is a potential capability, not an established operating standard.

Alongside it, Nvidia presented European use of its DSX AI Factory Platform on Wednesday. The package includes software that, by the company's account, can cut power consumption by up to 30% at the same token output, while closed-loop cooling is intended to bring water use for facility cooling close to zero. Both are target figures rather than results already achieved at scale.

Goldman Sees the Gap Narrowing

Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its buy rating on Nvidia on Wednesday, pointing to better visibility on AI data-center provisioning and a shrinking gap between supply and demand. That is precisely where the thesis will be tested. Orders are visible; whether they convert into business depends on deliverability. Planned investment can support the outlook, but it substitutes neither for finished capacity nor for binding delivery commitments.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Sentiment offered a reminder of how twitchy the market has become. On Thursday Nvidia slid alongside other AI-linked stocks under selling pressure, with AP attributing the strain partly to worries about expensive credit financing for data centers and AI chips, compounded by concerns that valuations had run too far.

Shorter provisioning times and lower resource consumption could improve the economics of the build-out. Whether they produce a workable ratio between capital deployed and returns is not something product announcements alone can prove. The next hard data point is the partners' targeted shipments.
