Nvidia's stock surges 11.6% weekly, but insiders sold $767M in 90 days. Valuation at 10-year low on forward earnings, BofA says.

The numbers coming out of Nvidia right now are the kind that make other chief executives envious. Revenue up 85 percent year over year. A data-center business growing at 92 percent. A stock that just posted its best weekly gain in 15 months, adding $562 billion to its market capitalization in five trading days and reclaiming the crown as the world's most valuable company from Apple. And yet, behind that wall of superlatives, the company's own insiders have spent the past three months doing something that sits awkwardly with all the official optimism: selling.

The Rally That Reached Escape Velocity

Nvidia closed Friday's session on the Nasdaq at $223.96, a weekly advance of 11.6 percent — the sharpest jump since May 2025. The surge pushed its market value to $5.42 trillion, comfortably ahead of Apple's $4.57 trillion. In Frankfurt, the stock trades at €194.30, up 8.21 percent on the week and just 4.05 percent below its 52-week high. The German listing sits at €194.46, roughly 3.97 percent under that same benchmark.

What lit the fuse? A public endorsement from Elon Musk, who called Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin architecture the "best AI computer" during a company call on August 4. SpaceX plans to deploy Nvidia's Vera Rubin GPUs exclusively for its compute expansion. BNP Paribas added fuel by predicting GPU shortages will persist into at least 2027.

There was also a strategic bolt-on: Nvidia struck a non-exclusive licensing deal worth around $20 billion with AI chip startup Groq, securing its inference technology and bringing founder Jonathan Ross and president Sunny Madra into the fold. Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon cautions the arrangement could attract antitrust scrutiny, but the market took it as another sign of Nvidia's determination to own every layer of the AI stack.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The Insider Sell Signal

Here's the tension. Over the past 90 days, Nvidia insiders have executed 13 transactions — every single one a sale, totaling roughly $767.2 million. That's not a rounding error; it's a meaningful stream of stock flowing from the company's own ranks into the market at a moment when the share price sits near its peak.

Institutional behavior offers a more mixed picture. SCS Capital Management trimmed its position by 8,590 shares in early August, while Antipodes Partners added 222,759 shares. Those moves largely cancel each other out. The insider sales, however, are unanimous in direction — a detail that's hard to dismiss even if it doesn't rise to the level of an alarm.

The Valuation Paradox

BofA Global Research has landed on a counterintuitive framing: despite the rally, Nvidia's valuation is at a ten-year low when measured against expected 2027 earnings, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 16. The bank projects revenue of $94 to $95 billion for the current quarter — above Nvidia's own guidance of $91 billion — and $107 to $108 billion for the following quarter, versus a consensus of $104 billion. BofA maintains a buy rating with a $350 price target.

The broader analyst community is less aggressive but still constructive. The consensus price target sits at $260.61, with Evercore ISI the most bullish at $352. Piper Sandler, notably, downgraded the stock from "Overweight" to "Neutral" back in June — a call that predates the recent recovery and now looks premature.

The Cost of Building the Future

The Vera Rubin platform doesn't come cheap. UBS analysis shows memory costs now account for 62 percent of each superchip's bill of materials, up from 53 percent for the previous-generation Blackwell Ultra. A single NVL72 rack packs as much working memory as 4,500 smartphones. Reports suggest Nvidia is exploring ways to reduce its reliance on traditional high-bandwidth memory in the upcoming Rubin Ultra generation to contain those expenses.

The company's financial engineering is equally ambitious. Nvidia holds private investments of $42.3 billion and contingent commitments of $27 billion across companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, CoreWeave, and Nebius. A recent take-or-pay arrangement guarantees minimum revenues to so-called neoclouds over six years, backing projects like SharonAI's 72-megawatt AI factory in Australia and Firmus's 360-megawatt cluster in Indonesia. Industry observers estimate total AI-related debt could exceed $7 trillion by 2029.

Two Readings of the Same Story

Entrepreneur Mark Cuban has drawn uncomfortable parallels between Nvidia's practice of financing its own customers and the capital patterns of the dot-com era. His July 28 comments knocked the stock down about 2 percent. Investor Michael Burry shares the concern, pointing to rising leverage across the sector.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The bull case, meanwhile, rests on fundamentals that are hard to argue with. Nvidia reported record first-quarter revenue of $81.6 billion for fiscal 2027, up 85 percent year over year, with the data-center segment growing 92 percent to $75.2 billion — well ahead of the company's own forecast of roughly $78 billion. Management responded by authorizing an additional $80 billion buyback and raising the quarterly dividend from $0.01 to $0.25 per share. The company also holds stakes worth $18.4 billion as of the end of the first quarter of 2026, with its CoreWeave position nearly doubling from 24.28 million to 47.21 million shares — a 95 percent increase.

Nvidia's ecosystem work continues apace: a partnership with Safe Superintelligence Inc. announced in late July, participation in the National Science Foundation's "State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs" program, and an "Open Secure AI Alliance" that now counts more than 120 organizations developing security standards for agentic AI systems.

The next chapter arrives on August 26, when Nvidia reports second-quarter results. For a stock trading near its highs with insiders selling and critics warning of systemic risk, that date will serve as more than a routine earnings event — it's the moment the market's competing narratives get tested against hard numbers.
