OHB System AG has been tapped by the European Space Agency to lead development of the next generation of Sentinel-3 topography satellites, a mandate worth more than EUR 554 million that puts the Bremen-based group at the helm of a European industrial consortium. Investors greeted the award by pushing the stock up 4.3% on the day.

The contract covers development of a single spacecraft. A second, identical satellite is written into the deal as an option — a distinction that matters when sizing up the business. The mission as planned calls for two identical vehicles, but only the first is firmly ordered; the option carries additional potential without amounting to a secured follow-on award.

Sharper Altimetry, Faster Revisits

The programme, known as Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography (S3-NGT), will use radar altimeters to survey oceans, coastlines, ice sheets and inland waters from a sun-synchronous orbit. According to OHB, the new generation should deliver broader coverage and shorter repeat cycles than the current Sentinel craft, sharpening sea-surface height measurements in particular. The data feed into Earth observation as well as environmental and climate research.

The mission architecture also breaks with precedent: optical instruments will in future fly on a separate mission, leaving the topography satellites to concentrate on radar altimetry. As prime contractor, OHB is responsible for leading the consortium rather than merely supplying components — the award is for development of the mission itself.

Broker Stays Bullish Ahead of Quarterly Update

Alongside the contract win, Jefferies analyst Chloe Lemarie kept her "Buy" rating and a EUR 280 price target on OHB on 29 October, ahead of the company's third-quarter figures. She expects the positive business trends from the first half to have carried through, supported by solid margin development. OHB has scheduled publication of its nine-month 2026 results for 12 November.

The stock's session was not uniformly positive: shares were down 1.7% at EUR 207.50 at one point, a move media reports attributed to a continuation of the recent downward run rather than any specific trigger.

Astroscale Talks, MediaMobil Stake, Completed Test Rig

Elsewhere in the group's news flow, OHB and Astroscale Holdings signed a letter of intent on 28 October to explore cooperation in space safety, space situational awareness and in-orbit services. No concrete orders or contract volumes were disclosed, and the memorandum covers only the examination of possible fields of collaboration — not an operating partnership already under way.

OHB also announced a strategic partnership with MediaMobil Communication GmbH, under which it intends to acquire a 25% stake through a capital increase. That holding remains a stated intention rather than a completed investment. By contrast, the company confirmed completion of the EU-funded Eu-BEST project, which concluded with the commissioning and acceptance of a full-scale test stand for rocket engines and rocket stages.
