OMV's Black Sea Payoff Still Two Years Out as Refining Carries the Quarter

A half-billion-euro annual lift from Neptun Deep won't reach OMV's books until 2027 at the earliest — and only once the Romanian gas field is running at full plateau. In the meantime, the Austrian group is leaning on its refineries to keep the numbers moving.

First gas from Neptun Deep is targeted for the first half of 2027, with OMV guiding toward an annual contribution of roughly EUR 500 million to clean CCS operating profit once plateau production is reached. Reuters reported the figure on 29 October. The company ties the estimate explicitly to that full-output level, not to the start of production, meaning the benefit will phase in rather than arrive in one step.

For the third quarter of 2026, OMV posted clean CCS operating profit of EUR 2.12 billion — a jump of 68% on the same period a year earlier. Management credited a supportive market backdrop in the Energy division, with higher oil and gas prices cited as a driver. Chief executive Emma Delaney, speaking to APA, described a "strong result in a supportive market environment."

The fuels business did much of the heavy lifting, as markedly wider refining margins and high utilisation lifted its contribution. Clean CCS earnings per share came in at EUR 3.54.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Omv?

Chemicals was the weak spot. Operating profit in the division fell to EUR 63 million, a result that disappointed against market expectations even as the group figure landed broadly in line with forecasts.

Guidance Points One Way, the Rating Another

Alongside the results, OMV raised several full-year 2026 targets. The European refining indicator margin is now seen at around USD 25/bbl, Brent at above USD 95/bbl, and organic investments at roughly EUR 3.5 billion. All three are expectations for the full year rather than results already banked.

Analysts, though, are not uniformly convinced. Morgan Stanley cut OMV to "Underweight" from "Equal-weight" on Friday — while lifting its price target to EUR 67.00 from EUR 65.50. The split move left the shares above the new target: the stock closed Friday at EUR 71.60, down 0.7%. The downgrade coincided with the decline but is not established as its sole cause.

Omv at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

On the shareholder register, BlackRock disclosed about a week earlier that its combined position in OMV voting rights and financial instruments had once again crossed the 5% threshold. Voting rights accounted for 4.53% and instruments a further 0.47%, with the reported total spanning both categories.

Investors get their next confirmed look at the company on 4 February 2027, when fourth-quarter 2026 results are due.
