Morgan Stanley turned bearish on OMV this week, trimming its rating to "Underweight" from "Equal Weight" and pinning a 67 euro price target on the Austrian oil and gas group. Analyst Guilherme Levy's call landed even as the stock closed Friday at 71.60 euros — above the target — after slipping 0.7% on the day.

The downgrade arrives against a refining backdrop that OMV expects to stay tight. CEO Emma Delaney pointed on the same day to low fuel inventories, which she expects to keep global refining markets stretched. Those same markets delivered a striking third-quarter result: the European refinery indicator margin tripled to USD 37.50 per barrel, and adjusted CCS operating profit before special items jumped 68% to EUR 2.12 billion.

Refining margins were not the only contributor. Energy also pitched in, while Chemicals came in weaker. CCS net income before special items reached EUR 1.15 billion, up 94%, translating to CCS earnings per share before special items of EUR 3.54.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Omv?

The upstream story carries its own long fuse. At the Neptun Deep offshore project in Romania, the production platform has been installed, and first gas is slated for 2027. CFO Reinhard Florey said the project is due to come on stream next year. OMV Petrom, the subsidiary running the venture, posted a net profit of RON 4.1 billion for January through September 2026, with investments of RON 6.6 billion over the same stretch.

Elsewhere on the corporate front, OMV raised its Brent price assumption for 2026 to above USD 95 per barrel. BlackRock reported a total position of 5.00% of voting rights, up from 4.97% in its prior filing, counting both shares and financial instruments. And OMV Petrom appointed Delaney to its supervisory board through April 28, 2029.

New business is taking shape too. OMV, together with Cocreators, was selected as operator to develop geothermal heating projects in the Amsterdam region following a European tender. The award covers development, with implementation described as a possibility rather than a commitment.
