OMV's Refining Windfall Faces a Reckoning as Morgan Stanley Turns Bearish
Published on 11/07/2026 at 16:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deA single analyst note has landed just as OMV is enjoying one of its strongest refining quarters in years — and the contrast says as much about the durability of Europe's refining boom as it does about the Austrian energy group itself.
Morgan Stanley cut OMV to "Underweight" from "Equal Weight" on Thursday, attaching a price target of EUR 67. The downgrade came on the same day CEO Emma Delaney told investors that low oil and fuel inventories should keep global refining markets tight for longer — a combination that leaves a supportive company view standing alongside a more cautious verdict from the sell side. OMV shares slipped 0.7% on Friday, though no link between the move and the downgrade has been established, and the note carried no specific rationale that could be pinned to the decision.
A quarter that flatters the refining book
The operating backdrop is undeniably strong. In the third quarter of 2026, OMV reported CCS operating profit before special items of EUR 2,117 million, a jump of 68%. CCS net income attributable to shareholders came in at EUR 1,153 million, while sales revenue from continuing operations reached EUR 8,959 million. Refining led the advance; chemicals, by contrast, remained under pressure.
That split is what makes the refining margin the number to watch. So long as it holds up, it can absorb weakness in chemicals. Should it fade, a larger share of earnings support would have to come from elsewhere — making any recovery in the chemicals business all the more important for a broader-based result.

Guidance raised across the board
Alongside the results, OMV lifted its assumptions for the year. The company now expects Brent to average above USD 95/bbl in 2026 and sees the European refining margin at around USD 25/bbl. Organic investment guidance was set at roughly EUR 3.5 billion. These are company forecasts rather than achieved full-year figures, but they signal a more favourable read on key framework conditions — a view that gains weight only if actual trading follows the higher assumptions.
Delaney's argument offers a possible reason the support could last: lean crude and product stocks should prolong the strain on refining markets worldwide. For investors, that translates into continued earnings support provided the shortage keeps feeding through into wider margins.
Neptun Deep nears first gas
Progress on the Black Sea is adding another leg to the story. Speaking on 29 October, Delaney said the Neptun Deep gas project was 89% complete, with first production expected in the first half of 2027.
Closer to home, repair work on an out-of-service tank at the Schwechat refinery caused smoke to develop on 27 October. OMV reported the situation as under control, according to Reuters, and one person was taken to hospital as a precaution after experiencing breathing difficulties.

The investment case hangs on margin endurance
What investors must now judge is how long the tailwind lasts. The bullish case does not require a swift recovery across every division — only that refining strength keeps offsetting the chemicals drag. The longer that works, the more credible a sustained robust operating performance becomes. The bearish mirror image is a softening refining market that strips away the main driver of the recent earnings surge while chemicals remain under pressure, weakening the offset that has flattered the group result.
A further company-specific catalyst could arrive with a final investment decision on the "Schleie" project, a planned waste-treatment plant in Vienna-Simmering reported on Wednesday. OMV said no decision has yet been taken; the facility would mechanically and chemically recycle non-hazardous plastic waste. For the nearer earnings outlook, though, the refining margin remains the decisive test — the measure by which the market will judge whether OMV's tailwind can keep carrying the load.
