Palantir's Sovereignty Pitch Meets a Wall Street Split: Record Quarter, Record Tension

The word Palantir chose for its own second-quarter performance was "otherworldly." Revenue climbed 93 percent to $1.935 billion, GAAP net income hit $1.062 billion on a 55 percent margin, and the company lifted its full-year guidance to a range of $8.150 billion to $8.158 billion — roughly 82 percent growth for the year. By any conventional measure, this was a quarter that rewrote the script.
Yet the market's response tells a more complicated story. The stock surged 36.25 percent within a week of the print, and shares have now advanced 41.02 percent over a seven-day stretch, trading at €154.14. But even after that sprint, the equity sits 17.26 percent below its 52-week high of €179.98, reached in November. For the calendar year, Palantir is still down 5.22 percent. A record quarter, it turns out, was not enough to erase months of accumulated valuation anxiety in a single week.
The Bull Case: Momentum That's Hard to Argue With
The headline numbers are difficult to dismiss. The US commercial business grew 149 percent to $764 million, while the US government segment expanded 90 percent to $809 million. The Rule-of-40 score — a blend of growth and profitability that rarely exceeds 100 in software — stands at 155 percent, with an adjusted operating margin of 62 percent. Palantir closed 220 deals above $1 million in the quarter, 73 of them in the double-digit millions, and the US commercial segment alone booked $2.132 billion in total contract value. The remaining deal volume in that segment has more than doubled year over year.
Management also raised its adjusted operating income outlook to $4.889 billion to $4.897 billion and lifted adjusted free cash flow guidance to $4.5 billion to $4.7 billion. The full-year commercial forecast now sits above $3.42 billion, up from a prior $3.22 billion.
Analysts have responded in kind. Bank of America lifted its price target to $255 — nearly 50 percent above the closing price at the time — and raised its 2026 revenue estimate to $7.85 billion with earnings per share of $1.47. Citi went further, setting a target as high as $245, while DA Davidson, Deutsche Bank, and Northland Securities have all joined the upgrade parade. Deutsche Bank moved Palantir from Hold to Buy on August 4 with a $200 target, citing what the analyst community broadly describes as the largest guidance raise in company history.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?
CEO Alex Karp has given the bulls a rallying cry: demand for "AI sovereignty" has been "unleashed." The phrase has quickly become Wall Street shorthand for justifying ever-higher multiples on a stock that has already repriced dramatically.
The Bear Case: Technicals and Timing
The skeptics see a different picture. The relative strength index sits at 74.2 — a classic overbought signal — and the stock trades 33.89 percent above its 50-day moving average. Annualized 30-day volatility of roughly 100 percent underscores just how jittery the market is in this name. Over the past month, shares have climbed 38.79 percent, leaving little room for error.
Cantor Fitzgerald captured the ambivalence perfectly: it raised its target to $156 but kept a Neutral rating — a signal that even sympathetic analysts see limited upside if growth decelerates even modestly. Benchmark made a similar choice on August 4, holding at Hold despite acknowledging the scale of the guidance increase.
Institutional behavior tells the same story. ARK Invest sold $6.38 million worth of Palantir shares on August 4, immediately after the stock jumped nearly 30 percent on the earnings release. Meanwhile, Allied Private Wealth built a new position of 4,826 shares worth roughly $563,000 in the second quarter, while Abner Herrman & Brock trimmed its stake by 13.2 percent. The institutional community is clearly not of one mind.
Beyond the Numbers: Partnerships and Friction
Palantir's growth is not happening in a vacuum. On August 3, the company announced a partnership with Mercury Systems to integrate its Foundry software into Mercury's manufacturing operations — digital twins and automated materials planning for US defense programs. It's another step in Palantir's strategy of embedding itself deeply into critical infrastructure, both governmental and commercial.
That depth, however, generates its own friction. The UN World Food Programme is reportedly extending its software contract with Palantir despite internal auditor concerns about dependency and cost. Separately, a report from the Center for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research alleges the company paid an effective global tax rate of just 1.4 percent in 2025 on $1.6 billion in pre-tax profit, with no US federal tax. Whether or not those claims hold up, they illustrate the scrutiny that accompanies rapid ascent.
Palantir at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The Maven Smart System's official status as a Pentagon program provides a long-term anchor in US defense, but it also keeps Palantir firmly in the crosshairs of political and regulatory attention.
The Deciding Variable
The investment thesis ultimately hinges on one factor: the durability of US commercial growth. Palantir's guidance for the third quarter calls for total revenue of $2.16 billion to $2.164 billion. If the commercial engine can keep running near its current 149 percent clip, the optimistic targets from Bank of America and Citi may prove conservative.
But the stock is priced for perfection. With a market capitalization of €357.53 billion, any single disappointing quarter could trigger an outsized correction — the kind that hits hardest when technical indicators are already flashing overbought. The next earnings report will show whether Karp's "unleashed" sovereignty demand translates into more million-dollar contracts, or whether the market has simply gotten ahead of a story that, however extraordinary, still has to be delivered quarter by quarter.
