Rare Earth ETF Hits New 52-Week Low as Heavy Oxides Weigh on Sector
Published on 10/13/2026 at 13:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe VanEck Rare Earth ETF (ISIN IE0002PG6CA6) touched a fresh 52-week low of 10.04 euros in pre-market trading on Tuesday, slipping 2.1% and landing exactly on its prior annual floor. The fund now sits 46% below its May peak of 18.76 euros, extending a slump that has erased roughly a fifth of its value since the start of the year.
Tuesday's decline came against a mixed backdrop in Chinese rare earth pricing. Shanghai Metals Market reported a split session: praseodymium-neodymium oxide added 3,500 yuan per tonne, while terbium oxide dropped 45,000 yuan per tonne. Metal producers held back on purchases, with dysprosium and terbium both remaining soft. No direct link between these price moves and the ETF's decline was established in reporting, though the overall picture aligns with the sector's broader downtrend.
The retreat follows a sector-wide selloff on Monday, when rare earth and strategic metals equities fell in unison. The US-listed VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (REMX) shed roughly 5% that day, while individual names including USA Rare Earth and MP Materials each lost about 6%. The broad S&P 500 ETF was nearly flat, underscoring that the weakness was concentrated in commodities and rare earth stocks rather than driven by any market-wide catalyst. Media reports also pointed to pending milestone-based US government funding for USA Rare Earth as a factor, though no verified connection to the wider market weakness or to the VanEck ETF was established.
On the physical market Monday, the picture was similarly uneven. Terbium oxide fell 50,000 renminbi per tonne and dysprosium oxide gave up 10,000 renminbi per tonne, according to Shanghai Metals Market, while praseodymium-neodymium oxide gained 500 renminbi per tonne.

Supply-Side Reference Prices in Focus
Adding to the sector's cost backdrop, Inner Mongolia BaoTou Steel Union and China Northern Rare Earth last Friday announced a fourth-quarter transaction price for rare earth concentrate of 38,769 yuan per tonne, tax-exempt, on a dry basis with a 50% REO content. Such reference prices shape the cost base across the entire supply chain and feed indirectly into the mining equities bundled in the fund.
Technical Picture Stays Stretched
The fund has lost 10% over the past seven trading sessions and 14% on the month. Year-to-date, it is down 20%, with a 25% decline over twelve months. Its relative strength index of 23.5 signals oversold conditions, while the price trades 31% below its 200-day moving average of 14.52 euros — a clear break from its longer-term trend.
A string of ostensibly supportive developments has failed to reverse the slide. The extension of the US-China trade truce roughly three weeks ago briefly lifted sentiment, yet the fund has since dropped 12.3%. A security agreement on Greenlandic raw materials from the same period did nothing to halt the decline — the ETF has lost 16.8% since. The founding of a European raw materials company about a month ago likewise failed to change the trajectory, with a 13.3% decline since. And the provisional EU-China trade agreement announced last Friday, which according to EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šef?ovi? includes measures to stabilize rare earth supply chains, has so far provided no noticeable support.
For holders of the accumulating fund — which makes no distributions and therefore passes no income to unitholders — the price decline feeds straight through to the share price, with no payout to act as a buffer. Whether the selling in terbium and dysprosium oxide continues, or whether strength in praseodymium-neodymium oxide provides a counterweight, is likely to shape the fund's direction in the coming days. No fundamental trigger for the latest move has emerged; the sector appears instead to be in a phase of heightened nervousness, where individual price signals from China can provoke outsized reactions in equity markets.
