Barclays has thrown its weight behind Renk Group, initiating coverage with an "Overweight" rating and a €60 price target — a call that places the bank firmly within a growing consensus of analysts who see substantial upside in the German defence supplier's stock. The move came just days after Renk posted a record first-half order intake, a result that has emboldened the sell-side even as the market itself remains conspicuously unmoved.

The Augsburg-based manufacturer of tank transmissions and drive systems reported incoming orders of €1.2bn for the first six months of 2026, a 29.7% jump year-on-year. Revenue advanced 2.7% to €637.2m, while adjusted EBIT climbed 10.1% to €98.2m, lifting the margin to 15.4%. Management reaffirmed its full-year guidance, targeting revenue above €1.5bn and adjusted EBIT in a range of €255m to €285m, with the company signalling it is aiming for the upper end of that band.

A Backlog That Keeps Building

The order book, a key metric for investors in this sector, stood at €7.4bn as of 30 June — up from €6.7bn at the close of 2025. That accumulation of work, combined with the company's assertion that 99% of its land business remains manned through 2030, gives analysts a level of revenue visibility that is rare in European industry. It is precisely this long-dated certainty that Barclays and others have latched onto in their assessments.

The strategic picture has also sharpened. Renk has announced plans to acquire David Brown Defence, a move designed to strengthen its position in marine propulsion systems across the Five Eyes nations, including Canada and the UK. On the operational front, the company has secured initial series orders for drive systems used in the Patria TRACKX armoured tracked vehicle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Analyst Targets Stack Up — But the Stock Lags

The post-results reaction from the sell-side has been broadly enthusiastic. Deutsche Bank reaffirmed its buy recommendation on Monday, lifting its price target to €73. Warburg Research held its "Buy" stance with a €63 target, citing the confirmation of the investment story through the defence business. The DZ Bank reiterated its buy call with a fair value of €64, pointing to the momentum in order intake. JPMorgan sits at "Overweight" with a €75 target, while Jefferies is at "Buy" with €60.

Barclays' initiation, led by analyst Afonso Osorio, cited Renk's global leadership in tracked-vehicle transmissions and its substantial order backlog as the primary drivers. The bank's €60 target implies meaningful upside from current levels, yet the share price has so far failed to respond in kind. On Tuesday, the stock slipped 1.29% to €49.92, and it now trades around €50.10 — more than 44% below its 52-week high of €90.20, reached in October.

A Valuation Gap With Two Readings

The disconnect between analyst targets — ranging from €60 to €73 — and the prevailing market price can be interpreted in contrasting ways. For bulls, it represents a gap that will close as the company continues to deliver operationally. For the more cautious, it may signal that the market has already priced in much of the good news, or that lingering concerns about execution and the broader defence spending cycle are keeping a lid on the shares.

What is not in dispute is the direction of travel. The monthly chart shows a marked recovery, suggesting investors are gradually coming around to the strength of the underlying business. The combination of a record backlog, reaffirmed guidance, and the planned expansion into marine propulsion through David Brown Defence forms the core of the investment case. Whether the valuation gap narrows will likely hinge on how order intake develops in the second half of the year — and whether the company can convert its strategic ambitions into tangible earnings growth.
