Renk Slides Toward 52-Week Low as UBS Rebuilds 5% Stake and Takeover Talk Simmers

Renk stock falls 3.3% to EUR 40.53, near its 52-week low, as UBS crosses the 5% threshold again and the David Brown Defence deal advances.

Shares in Renk Group came under renewed selling pressure on Thursday, with the defence gearbox maker's stock shedding 3.3% to change hands at EUR 40.53 as investors rotated out of the European defence sector. The decline leaves the equity hovering just above its 52-week trough of EUR 39.28 — a level that underscores how quickly sentiment has cooled since the spring.

The pullback contrasts sharply with the prior session, when the stock added 1.9% to close at EUR 42.03, valuing the company at EUR 4.20 billion. That brief bounce had raised hopes that the worst of the recent correction was over. Instead, Thursday's session showed that buyers remain hesitant.

UBS Crosses Reporting Threshold Again

Amid the broader sector weakness, Renk's shareholder register has shifted. UBS has rebuilt its holding to 5.13% of the company's capital, according to a mandatory disclosure, crossing the 5% reporting threshold once more. The position is largely synthetic in nature: only 1.08% of share capital — equivalent to 1,078,870 shares — is attributable as direct voting rights, while the remaining 4.05% is held through financial instruments. Earlier in the month the Swiss bank's stake had dipped just below the threshold before being topped up again.

Marine Acquisition Takes Shape

On the operational front, Renk continues to push ahead with the expansion strategy it flagged earlier this year. More than a month ago the company signed a binding agreement to acquire British marine gearbox specialist David Brown Defence from Stellex Capital Management. Bloomberg has reported that the deal carries an estimated valuation of USD 200 million to USD 250 million. Completion is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

The purchase is designed to strengthen Renk's hand in maritime propulsion and to open up additional capacity for future naval shipbuilding programmes — a segment where demand visibility stretches out over years rather than quarters.

Mixed Quarterly Print, Confirmed Full-Year Guidance

Renk's most recent results painted a mixed picture. Revenue for the second quarter of 2026 reached EUR 353.59 million, a modest 1.74% increase year on year. Earnings per share, however, halved to EUR 0.15 from EUR 0.30 in the comparable period.

Management has left its full-year targets untouched. The company is chasing revenue of more than EUR 1.5 billion, alongside adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of between EUR 255 million and EUR 285 million. Hitting those numbers will hinge on smooth order execution and stable supply chains; scaling efficiencies in manufacturing are expected to do much of the heavy lifting in the coming quarters.

Analysts Split Between Upgrade and Takeover Thesis

The analyst community has offered two distinct narratives. Roughly a week ago, Goldman Sachs lifted its rating to "Buy" from "Neutral" while keeping a EUR 65 price target. Analyst Sam Burgess framed the upgrade as an attractive entry point following the stock's retreat, projecting rising production volumes and margin expansion through 2030.

A different lens comes from JPMorgan. In a note dated 18 August, analyst David Perry described Renk as an appealing takeover candidate for larger sector peers and set a EUR 75 price target. He was explicit that no concrete offer exists, but pointed to substantial consolidation potential across the defence industry — speculation that has kept the debate over Renk's future role alive even as the shares drift lower.

For now, the company sits at the intersection of three forces: its own portfolio build-out, hard-coded profitability targets, and persistent chatter about sector-wide dealmaking.
