Rheinmetall Courts Investors After a Week of Contract Wins and a 36% Slide

Rheinmetall is making the rounds with capital-market audiences this week, pairing a packed conference schedule with a steady drumbeat of operational announcements. The defense and technology group takes part Wednesday in the Berenberg and Goldman Sachs German Corporate Conference in Munich, then follows up Thursday at the Baader Bank investment conference in the same city.
Those appearances come against a bruising stretch for the stock. Shares closed Tuesday at EUR 995.80, down 1.6%, after finishing the prior session at EUR 1,012.00. The decline extends a year-to-date loss of 36%, and Wednesday's Xetra close of EUR 997.80 — a drop of 1.5% — did little to interrupt the downtrend.
Autonomous Systems Take Center Stage
Fresh from the announcement that it will test networked unmanned systems for harbor and critical maritime infrastructure protection during the NATO exercise REPMUS26, Rheinmetall is leaning harder into autonomy. Chief executive Armin Papperger has described Europe's missile stockpiles as "alarmingly low," according to a media report, pointing to robotics as an increasingly vital component of modern armed forces.
The company is putting money behind that thesis. Rheinmetall Canada broke ground on a 7,060-square-meter expansion of its Québec plant on September 16, adding capacity for land-based autonomy. American Rheinmetall, meanwhile, booked an order from the U.S. Marine Corps for unmanned ground systems.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
Artillery and Vehicle Orders Pile Up
Demand for conventional munitions shows no sign of cooling. On September 14, Rheinmetall disclosed an order from an international customer for a five-digit quantity of 155-mm artillery shells, a contract worth a low three-digit million-euro sum with deliveries slated for completion in 2027.
Mid-September also brought the unveiling of new tactical vehicles developed with Mercedes-Benz UK under the Team Wolf banner.
Naval and Digital Milestones
On the maritime side, the company laid the keel for a third fleet service boat at its Wolgast site on September 14, the same day Defense Minister Boris Pistorius held out the prospect of a fourth vessel of the class.
Digital networking efforts are advancing in parallel. In early September, Rheinmetall released core interface specifications for its combat suite as open-source software, covering programming interfaces for onboard systems and tactical functions, among other elements.
Civilian Manufacturing Gets a Funding Boost
Beyond defense, the group is channeling investment into the production capacity of its supplier division. Subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology is ramping up capacitor manufacturing at its Hartha facility in Saxony, where it is developing new production processes for so-called NanoLam capacitors. The site will receive roughly EUR 1.5 million in public funding, with total project investment exceeding EUR 4.4 million.
The picture heading into this week's investor meetings is a split one: solid utilization driven by defense demand on one side, and an accelerating modernization of the civilian technology base on the other.
