Rheinmetall closed up 2.4% at €1,021.40 after a naval servicing contract and CEO Papperger's pushback on downturn fears.

Rheinmetall shares pushed back above the psychologically significant €1,000 threshold on Wednesday, snapping a prolonged stretch of weakness as a fresh government servicing contract and a combative defense from the company's chief executive combined to steady sentiment.

The Düsseldorf-based defense group closed the session up 2.4% at €1,021.40, a firmer reading than the modest 0.4% gain to €1,002.00 seen earlier in the day. The advance follows months of share-price declines that had left the stock nursing a 34% loss since the start of the year.

At the heart of the rebound was a multi-year framework agreement awarded to Rheinmetall's Naval Systems division by the Generalzolldirektion, Germany's federal customs directorate. The contract covers maintenance, servicing and emergency response for four LNG-powered customs vessels stationed at the coastal bases of Lubmin, Neustadt in Holstein, Wilhelmshaven and Emden. Three of the ships were built last year at the Peene-Werft yard.

The vessels patrol cross-border goods traffic within German territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone. Neither party disclosed the financial terms, though the deal bolsters Rheinmetall's recurring service revenue at a time when investors are scrutinizing the durability of its earnings base.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

CEO Pushes Back on Weakness Narrative

Chief executive Armin Papperger used an interview to challenge fears of a lasting downturn at the defense contractor. He characterized June's sharp share-price slide — triggered by the collapse of Bundeswehr frigate projects — as a cyclical fluctuation rather than a structural setback. Papperger pointed out that the company's market value has quadrupled over recent years, and reaffirmed the overarching goal of bringing the German armed forces to full operational readiness by 2029.

The maritime contract was not the only operational signal this week. Rheinmetall has been showcasing its naval credentials on the military side as well: at the NATO REPMUS26 exercise on Monday, the group tested networked, uncrewed systems designed to protect harbors and critical infrastructure. The containerized solution is intended to serve the German Navy as a flexibly deployable mission system.

International vehicle cooperation is expanding in parallel. In the UK, Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz UK unveiled light tactical vehicles for the British Army and invested in a vibration testing facility at the Telford site for development of the Challenger 3 main battle tank.

NanoLam Plant Secures State Funding

Beyond the maritime business, Rheinmetall is pressing ahead with investment in advanced base technologies. Its subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology in Hartha, Saxony, received a funding commitment of roughly €1.5 million on Tuesday for production processes for high-performance capacitors. The total investment volume for NanoLam manufacturing comes to more than €4.4 million.

The core defense business continues to keep production lines busy. On September 14, Rheinmetall booked a major order for a low five-digit quantity of 155-mm artillery shells from an international customer. The contract volume, which will be recognized in the third quarter of 2026, sits in the low triple-digit millions of euros, with deliveries scheduled for 2027.

Investor Conferences Take Center Stage

With news flow running heavy, management is seeking direct engagement with institutional investors. Rheinmetall is attending the joint Berenberg and Goldman Sachs conference in Munich on Wednesday, followed by the Baader Bank investor conference at the same location on Thursday.

Against a backdrop of a longer correction phase, the stock is now trading exactly 50% below its 52-week high of €2,007.00. At the upcoming conferences, the leadership is expected to explain how growing ammunition demand and new service contracts should contribute to medium-term stabilization.

Autumn Milestones Loom

The coming weeks will show whether the current recovery has legs. The next key test for investors is the release of third-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for November 5. Until then, the company must prove itself in a shifting market environment in which new Bundeswehr procurement programs are rebalancing the future priorities of defense spending. Rheinmetall is betting that the execution of existing defense plans will continue to underpin operational growth.
