Rheinmetall's 17% Week Hinges on a Budget Bet Berenberg Won't Back

Rheinmetall shares closed Friday at EUR 1,090.20, up 5.4% on the session, capping a seven-day run that has added 17% to the defence group's market value. The trigger was not a contract win but a forecast: Morgan Stanley analysts, as reported by dpa-AFX, expect a pick-up in defence budget awards toward year-end and flag the possibility of a seasonal rally across the sector. Investors moved early, bidding up European defence names and lifting the DĂĽsseldorf-based manufacturer with them.

The rally rests on a budget thesis rather than a signed order book, and that distinction matters. Speculation about imminent fiscal decisions and faster drawdowns of procurement funds has been enough to move prices, but the market has yet to see the contracts themselves.

A EUR 1.5 Billion Liquidity Cushion

Rheinmetall has been preparing for scale on its own terms. The company doubled its syndicated credit line ahead of schedule, from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion — a buffer that buys room to pre-fund materials and production ramp-ups in a capital-intensive business, and one that cushions unforeseen swings.

On the operational side, the group's Rheinmetall Expal Munitions subsidiary commissioned a new medium-calibre production line at its Albacete site in Spain. The investment came to roughly EUR 20 million, and the plant is designed to turn out about 1.2 million projectiles and some 1.8 million cartridge cases a year in calibres from 20 mm to 35 mm. Medium-calibre ammunition feeds air-defence systems and infantry fighting vehicles on a continuous basis, so reliable volume in a tight market tends to lock in customers over the long haul.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

The company is also courting the US. Subsidiary American Rheinmetall presented selected systems for the US Army at the AUSA 2026 defence exhibition, covering combat vehicles, air defence, ammunition and autonomous systems — a positioning play aimed at future US procurement programmes.

Berenberg Steps Back

Not everyone is chasing the momentum. Roughly a week ago, Berenberg downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" and cut its price target to EUR 1,020 from EUR 1,600. The move underscores how demanding the valuation looks after the run to historic highs, and it implies narrower scope for further gains in the near term. At this level, the market is unlikely to forgive operational missteps.

There is a wider context the Friday surge obscures: despite the weekly jump, the shares remain down 30% since the start of the year. The scale of that drawdown explains why investors are still hunting for firm direction rather than piling in outright.

November 5 Is the Real Test

Geopolitics has provided a tailwind — escalation in the Ukraine war and mounting doubt over continued US military and intelligence support for Kyiv have pushed investors toward European defence assets — but that alone won't sustain an advance. What the market now wants is evidence that the wave of orders actually stabilises margins.

That evidence is due on November 5, when Rheinmetall reports third-quarter 2026 results. The figures will show how efficiently the new capacity is already running and how much of the heightened demand has flowed through to the financials. Until then, the stock's near-term path looks set to stay volatile, with the budget-award thesis and Berenberg's caution pulling in opposite directions.
