Rheinmetall and MSC were jointly awarded the Mangalia shipyard in Romania on 19 October, a deal carrying a combined purchase price of around EUR 138 million. The yard is earmarked to play a significant role in the construction of four naval vessels ordered by the Romanian government — a concrete project that gives investors a firmer foothold than an unconfirmed order report, though it is not yet proof of the economic success of the planned use.

That distinction matters. The purchase price applies to both partners jointly; it is neither capital expenditure attributable to Rheinmetall alone nor an order value for shipbuilding. Anyone conflating those figures would misread the scope of the news. What counts for a forward-looking valuation is how concretely Rheinmetall describes the link between the site and its intended role — and the company's own wording is telling: the yard is to play an important role, a planned use rather than delivered output.

Analysts Keep Their Ratings but Lower the Bar

UBS cut its price target for Rheinmetall on 20 October from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,360, while leaving its "Buy" recommendation unchanged. In its assessment the Swiss bank pointed to the capital markets day scheduled for 26 and 27 November. Bernstein Research, on the same day, reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating with a EUR 1,200 target, changing neither its vote nor its mark.

The stock closed at EUR 1,014.60 on Friday, below both houses' targets. According to media reports, news of possible Italian orders had not triggered a sustained turnaround by then.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

An Italian Order Rumor That Cuts Both Ways

Reuters reported, citing the Italian newspaper Milano Finanza, that the joint venture with Leonardo had allegedly received army orders totaling EUR 3.7 billion, covering A2CS combat vehicles and next-generation main battle tanks. Rheinmetall did not confirm the award; Leonardo confirmed no contract signature. The reported sum therefore must not be treated as a confirmed order — and it concerns the joint venture, not Rheinmetall on its own.

That gap between confirmed fact and expectation is where valuation risk builds. The adverse scenario would not necessarily be a failure of the projects themselves; a smaller economic contribution than already priced in could be enough to weaken the optimistic reading. The quality of confirmation, not the size of a headline, remains the deciding factor.

Production Expands on Several Fronts

On the operational side, Rheinmetall commissioned a new medium-caliber production line at its Albacete site on 16 October. According to the company, it has an annual capacity of roughly three million munitions components.

The group has also prematurely doubled its syndicated credit line from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. Third-quarter figures are due on 5 November.

One report went the other way. Handelsblatt wrote on Thursday that the Bundeswehr is to procure 48 GARMR drone-defense systems from Diehl as an interim solution, citing delays with Rheinmetall's Skyranger system. The procurement was described as a planned project.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What the Capital Markets Day Must Deliver

As long as Mangalia's announced role holds, the award remains a tangible anchor for a positive view. If Rheinmetall credibly fleshes out the economic benefit, that could support the project's valuation; should its significance disappoint, expectations for the site would have to be scaled back accordingly. The capital markets day on 26 and 27 November is the next fixed date on the calendar — an occasion to re-examine the company's prospects, though no specific statement on Mangalia has been promised.

Until then, investors are left weighing advance trust against confirmation discipline. The joint shipyard award is solid ground. The intended use remains a prospect, and the Italian awards remain unconfirmed. Those differences should shape any further assessment.
