Rhineland-Palatinate's Emergency-Response Platform Hits 40,000 Users as Developers Look to AI

Roughly 150 firefighters, emergency planners and municipal administrators gathered at the Landau campus of the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Technology (RPTU) on 18 September 2026 to reshape the digital backbone of the state's fire and disaster-response operations.
The occasion was the "BKS Portal RLP Workshop 2026," convened by the state office responsible for the platform, the Landesamt für Brand- und Katastrophenschutz Rheinland-Pfalz (LfBK RLP). Its purpose: to sharpen the technical support available to crews in the field and prepare the system for demands still on the horizon.
Four tracks, one goal
Organisers split the day into four working groups — administration, training, operations and an artificial-intelligence outlook — a structure the LfBK said was chosen to reflect the many different faces of administrative and tactical work.
Two of those tracks, administration and operations, focused on the practical mechanics of cooperation: how information and workflows can move more smoothly between the organisations involved and the municipal bodies that run them. Training formed a third core theme, centred on how responders are schooled in using the system. The fourth track examined where artificial intelligence might eventually assist, sketching out possibilities for software-supported analysis during operations. Bringing administrative staff and frontline practitioners into the same room, organisers noted, is meant to keep the technology aligned with what crews actually need on the ground.
A platform with reach
The BKS Portal has become a fixture of fire and civil-protection work across the state. According to the LfBK, it now counts around 40,000 registered users.
Its scale shows up in the data as well: more than 7 million records have been migrated into the portal, creating a single consistent information base for every connected station and volunteer fire service. An integrated learning platform forms another pillar of the system — it has been running for 5 years and is used continuously for qualifying operational and command personnel.
Feedback and findings from the Landau sessions will now feed into the platform's ongoing development, with the aim of further strengthening digital readiness and coordination in fire and disaster protection.
