Rivian Wins UBS Upgrade as R2 Ramp Faces Its Margin Test

UBS has lifted its rating on Rivian Automotive from Neutral to Buy, keeping a 17 US-dollar price target, and the market responded swiftly: the stock climbed 12% on the day, with pre-market trading showing a 4.4% advance to 11.31 EUR. The upgrade rests less on the electric vehicle maker's sales momentum than on a single operational question — whether the R2 ramp-up can finally translate volume into positive automotive gross margins.

Analyst Joseph Spak is betting it can. UBS expects Rivian to reach a positive automotive gross margin by the end of 2026, with the first positive quarterly figure landing in the first quarter of 2027. That timing sits slightly behind Rivian's own guidance, which points to a positive automotive gross margin for the full year 2026, though both signal the same direction of travel.

Demand Signals Look Solid — Margins Are the Missing Piece

The case for the upgrade draws on encouraging early demand for the R2. UBS describes initial interest as solid, citing more than 103,000 demonstration drives in the third quarter of 2026 and a reservation conversion rate above management's expectations. The R2 was already Rivian's best-selling model in that period.

Additional R2 trims priced at roughly 45,000 to 57,000 US dollars should widen the addressable market, and UBS forecasts around 82,000 R2 deliveries in 2027. On the production side, Rivian has added a second shift at its Normal plant and plans a third in the first half of 2027. Those demand indicators are encouraging, but they do not yet prove that vehicle production can be run profitably at scale.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rivian Automotive Registered (A)?

The third-quarter numbers illustrate the gap. Revenue came in at 2.155 billion US dollars, up 38% year over year, yet the automotive segment posted a gross loss of 80 million US dollars — an improvement on the 130 million US dollar loss a year earlier. Rivian attributes roughly 120 million US dollars in added costs to the R2 launch. Software and services, by contrast, generated a gross profit of 256 million US dollars, a reminder that group-level profitability does not mean the car business is profitable on its own.

A Financing Cushion, Not a Clean Bill of Health

UBS puts Rivian's available and targeted future capital at around 13 billion US dollars, a figure that includes funds the company aims to raise rather than cash already on hand. On that basis, the bank sees no need for additional capital before 2029. The balance sheet offers some reassurance: Rivian ended the third quarter of 2026 with 5.502 billion US dollars in cash and short-term investments, though free cash outflow in the quarter reached 1.124 billion US dollars.

The margin improvement UBS anticipates will not plug the cash drain overnight. The bank projects negative free cash flow of 3.7 billion US dollars for 2027 and year-end liquidity of roughly 4.8 billion US dollars. Rivian's own outlook still foresees an adjusted EBITDA loss of 1.75 to 1.85 billion US dollars for 2026.

Rivian Automotive Registered (A) at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Deliveries are trending in the right direction. Rivian raised the lower bound of its 2026 delivery guidance and now expects 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles, with the R2 accounting for the majority of shipments in the final quarter. Beyond the core numbers, UBS flags December's Autonomy Day and the planned customer launch of Autonomy+ in early 2027 as potential catalysts, viewing the point-to-point service as a possible rival to Tesla's FSD offering.

None of that changes the central test. The upgrade rewards the prospect of profitable growth rather than profits already booked, and if the R2 ramp fails to deliver better vehicle margins at the expected pace, the financing assumptions underpinning the Buy rating will come under sharper scrutiny.
