Samsung's Bonus Vote and Buyback Exit Obscure a Firmer Order Book

Two pieces of Samsung Electronics news this week pulled investor attention in opposite directions: a union ballot on bonus deductions at loss-making chip units, and the expiry of a 15 trillion won share buyback that had been propping up the stock. Neither, on closer inspection, says much about whether customers are still ordering memory in volume.

Roughly 81.03% of participating union members backed a proposal to soften bonus deductions for loss-making units within the Device Solutions division. The vote ran from October 14 through Thursday. What it covers is narrow — compensation at units running at a loss. It does not abolish the deductions, does not raise pay across the board, and does not amount to a group-wide bonus policy already in force.

That distinction matters for anyone reading the ballot as a cost signal. Strong consolidated profit does not guarantee that every division is in the black, and the bonus question should be weighed separately from the aggregated figures. The union vote settles a pay matter; it is not evidence of an already-changed cost base.

What the Buyback's End Actually Means

Samsung closed its 15 trillion won repurchase programme on October 6. Media reports tied the expiry of chipmaker buybacks to a broader market selloff, adding fears of weakening AI investment to the list of drags. The two forces are not the same: a buyback affects demand for the shares, while operating momentum depends on whether customers keep their memory orders on the books. On that second question, recent analyst work is less gloomy than the market mood suggests.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Samsung Electronics?

KB Securities estimated on Wednesday that long-term contracts cover about 80% of Samsung's planned memory output for 2027 — a substantial share of intended production already locked in. The figure is an analyst estimate, not revenue reported by Samsung. By the same assessment, planned HBM4 volumes are fully covered by long-term agreements, while conventional DRAM and NAND sit at roughly 70%.

Contract Cover Is Not a Profit Forecast

For investors, that contract tie-up argues against equating softer AI sentiment with demand that vanishes overnight. It does not, however, answer every earnings question. A share of committed volumes alone cannot be converted into profit, so the read-across still depends on how Samsung frames demand and its own business outlook.

The company's own numbers set the frame. On October 8, Samsung guided to consolidated third-quarter 2026 revenue of approximately 195 trillion KRW and operating profit of about 107.4 trillion KRW — both preliminary company forecasts.

Xi'an Upgrade Adds Layers, Not Capacity

On the manufacturing side, Samsung confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday that it is modernising its NAND plant in Xi'an, China, converting the facility to V9 NAND with 286 layers. The company said the work is being carried out in close coordination with the US government and adds neither production capacity nor an additional fab. Samsung attributes the upgrade to customer demand, framing it as a technical conversion of existing lines rather than an expansion of output.

The next hard checkpoint is the third-quarter earnings conference on October 29 at 10 a.m. Korean Standard Time, when full results and a call will give investors the measure to test Samsung's contract-backed demand against the market's worries.
