SanDisk's October 29 Earnings Call Looms as Memory Selloff Tests a NAND Story Caught in a DRAM Narrative
Published on 10/16/2026 at 04:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deA deepening correction across the memory chip complex has pulled SanDisk shares sharply lower, even as the company's product lineup and a fresh analyst endorsement argue for a more nuanced reading of the selloff.
The stock changed hands at EUR 1,210.00 on Thursday, down 4.0% on the day, extending a seven-session slide that has erased 12% of its value. Earlier in the week, the shares had closed at EUR 1,250.00. The retreat has left the price 41% below its 52-week high — a gap that one reading of the tape puts at 39% — a technical position that keeps the equity on the back foot heading into its next scheduled news event.
A Sector-Wide Storm, Not a Company-Specific One
The pressure is hardly confined to SanDisk. Selling swept through semiconductor and storage names broadly, with Micron, Western Digital and Seagate all caught in the downdraft. Two forces are doing the damage: a broad macroeconomic backdrop that has turned less forgiving, and mounting caution over the scale of spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
AP reported that US equities weakened after inflation picked up again, while uncertainty over the cost and viability of AI infrastructure projects weighed on listings worldwide. Reuters attributed SanDisk's particular strain to concerns about how AI infrastructure will be financed, rising credit costs, and doubts about whether the hefty investments can be sustained — compounded by sector-wide restraint and profit-taking after the strong gains logged earlier in 2026.
That investors are scrutinizing returns on multi-billion-dollar technology projects is, in itself, a reasonable instinct. When refinancing costs climb, capital expenditure budgets inevitably come under review.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?
The CXMT Confusion
Adding to the unease were reports of progress at Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies. CXMT's leadership unveiled plans for next-generation server memory modules, news that rippled across the entire sector.
Market observers were quick to point out the mismatch: CXMT's announced developments center on DRAM architecture and DDR5 products, whereas SanDisk operates in NAND flash. The two companies do not compete directly on the products in question. Even so, the fear of mounting competition from China radiated outward and hit the whole industry — a segment mix-up that generates artificial selling pressure with little fundamental justification.
SanDisk's reach extends well beyond data centers, a fact the current panic obscures. On Tuesday the company introduced its Guardian series — exceptionally durable memory cards ranging from 32 GB to 512 GB, aimed at dashcams and home security cameras. An exclusive memory partnership with Meta for future VR headsets further underscores that SanDisk holds firm positions in concrete end devices, well away from speculative AI hype.
Mizuho Stays Bullish
Not everyone is running for the exits. Mizuho maintained its "Outperform" rating on SanDisk on October 6 and raised its price target to $2,050 from $1,875 — a signal that at least one analyst house sees medium-term potential beneath the short-term noise.
The next real test arrives on October 29, 2026, when SanDisk reports results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and walks investors through them on a conference call. How management characterizes the persistent pricing and margin pressure in the memory segment will likely set the tone.
Should the company demonstrate that NAND flash demand remains stable and that high-margin orders are ramping on schedule, the recent selloff could lose momentum quickly. Until then, nerves are likely to stay frayed — but the operating substance makes a lasting crisis hard to square with the evidence.
