SAP Pushes AI Deeper Into Regulated Markets as Erste Group Makes Its 2027 Bet

SAP opened Cohere North and the Max Success Plan to more customers, but the 28 January 2027 results will test whether the catalog converts into cloud growth.

SAP spent the past week widening access to two of its customer-facing programs while rolling out new data capabilities, a burst of activity that lands just as analysts begin positioning for a stronger 2027. The Walldorf-based software maker said Cohere North is now generally available on the SAP Business AI Platform, a release aimed squarely at regulated industries with sovereignty and data-residency requirements. Separately, the Max Success Plan was opened to all customers — whether they contract directly with SAP or work through a partner.

Both moves expand what customers can reach. Neither, on its own, proves they will spend more.

That distinction sits at the heart of the current investment debate. A product release is not a revenue line, and general availability guarantees neither adoption nor billings. What matters for the equity story is whether the broadening catalog converts into fresh demand for SAP's cloud portfolio — and whether that demand shows up in the numbers.

The Cloud Is the Yardstick

The third quarter of 2026 provides the benchmark. Cloud revenue climbed 26% to €6.668 billion, while total revenue reached €10.270 billion, up 13%. The Current Cloud Backlog stood at €24.144 billion, 28% higher year on year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Those figures frame how investors should read the recent announcements. Management guided cloud revenue and cloud-plus-software revenue for the full year toward the upper end of their respective ranges — a bar that makes a positive surprise harder to clear. Confirming guidance is not the same as beating it, and the product news must do more than generate interest; it has to underpin expectations that are already tilted toward growth.

Sovereignty as a Demand Lever

Cohere North targets an audience that has been slow to adopt generative AI precisely because of where its data must live. If the offering lowers that barrier, SAP could widen the base of its cloud franchise. The collaboration with NTT, announced on 28 October around SAP Sovereign Cloud and SAP Business AI, points in the same direction.

There is a supporting thread on the transformation side, too. SAP said on 28 October that four migration and modernization assistants are already working on early customer projects — though general availability for those tools was not announced. The potential lies in the combination: AI applications opening new use cases while the assistants help customers through their cloud ERP migrations. Pull that off, and the AI strategy becomes more than a sequence of individual launches.

Erste Group Moves to Buy

Erste Group upgraded SAP from Hold to Buy on Friday. Analyst Hans Engel cited an expected acceleration in revenue growth in 2027 alongside a further rise in the operating margin. That is a forecast, not a delivered result — but it describes precisely the combination the bull case hinges on: faster growth and better profitability at the same time.

The Max Success Plan availability fits that customer-side narrative. So do the data-platform additions unveiled Thursday, when SAP announced new lakehouse and data-fabric functions for Business Data Cloud, including native support for Apache Iceberg and a universal catalog built on Apache Polaris. Investors should keep the categories straight: these are product features, whereas the Max Success Plan concerns how customers access an offering.

The Contractual Counterweight

The bear argument is about monetization. General availability means neither guaranteed usage nor incremental revenue, and support for early customer projects is a long way from broad rollout. Anyone extrapolating a growth acceleration from these steps is getting ahead of the commercial evidence.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The contractual backdrop is shifting as well. On 9 July, the European Commission published the summary of its decision making SAP's commitments on ERP maintenance and support legally binding. SAP must, among other things, loosen contract terms and give customers more flexibility on contracts, cancellations and fees. That could weigh on the predictability of maintenance revenue — not an automatic sales decline, but a risk that new AI offerings gain commercial traction more slowly just as customers start using their contractual room to maneuver.

The 28 January Test

As long as SAP sustains its high cloud growth and stands behind guidance, Cohere North remains a plausible additional growth driver. An acceleration paired with a rising margin would validate the optimistic case. Should cloud momentum fade, more product announcements alone will not be enough of a counterargument, and investors would need to discount the expected contribution of the new AI offerings more cautiously.

The next results date for the fourth quarter and full year 2026 is 28 January 2027. That is the next real checkpoint — not for counting announcements, but for growth, guidance delivery and the economic staying power of the strategy.
