SAP's Cloud Engine Roars Into Year-End, but Asam Flags a Booking Cliff Ahead

SAP's Q3 cloud revenue rose 26% to EUR 6.668 billion and operating profit topped EUR 3 billion for the first time, but its CFO warned of softer Q4 bookings.

SAP closed the third quarter of 2026 with its cloud machine firing on all cylinders — and with a warning shot across the bow of the quarter that matters most. Finance chief Dominik Asam told reporters, per dpa-AFX, that softer sentiment could dent bookings in the final three months of the year, a stretch that typically delivers roughly half of SAP's annual contract signings. That single caveat did more to shape Thursday's trading than any line of the earnings report itself.

The quarter that was: a first for operating profit

The numbers themselves were hard to argue with. Cloud revenue came in at EUR 6.668 billion for the quarter, up 26% year on year, while total revenue reached EUR 10.27 billion. The current cloud backlog — the contracted business SAP has yet to recognize — climbed 28% to EUR 24.1 billion, or 26% at constant currencies.

Perhaps the standout figure: adjusted operating profit crossed the EUR 3 billion mark in a single quarter for the first time. Non-IFRS operating profit landed at EUR 3.030 billion, an 18% advance on the prior-year period. The IFRS figure rose by the same 18%.

Guidance nudged up, but only on the top line

Management now expects full-year 2026 cloud revenue at the upper end of its EUR 25.8 billion to EUR 26.2 billion range at constant currencies. Combined cloud and software revenue was likewise pointed toward the top of its band. What SAP did not do was raise its profit outlook — a detail that kept the upbeat revenue signal from translating into unqualified enthusiasm.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

The stock's reaction told the story of two competing narratives. Shares surrendered early gains and slipped into the red against a broadly weak market, with media reports pointing to profit-taking after the recent rally, a soft technology sector, and cautious analyst commentary on how quickly artificial intelligence investments will convert into revenue.

Asam's year-end math

The concentration of bookings in the fourth quarter is what makes Asam's caution consequential. Roughly half of annual signings land in those final months, so a weaker mood among buyers could ripple into both Q4 bookings and the 2027 outlook. The CFO's framing was about a possible slowdown in the pace of cloud backlog growth — not a contraction — but it still puts a ceiling on hopes for further acceleration.

The Street leans bullish, with targets on the move

Analysts largely looked past the year-end jitters. Berenberg lifted its price target to EUR 240 from EUR 205 on Thursday, keeping a buy rating and citing the quarterly metrics alongside higher revenue and margin expectations. Goldman Sachs went further, raising its target to EUR 258 from EUR 230, also with a buy. Analyst Mohammed Moawalla singled out the strength of the current cloud backlog and said he expects SAP to keep widening its lead over rivals. Others on the sell side praised the cloud transformation and the commercial traction of the company's AI offerings.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

None of that erased the nearer-term debate. A strong quarter, after all, answers questions about the past — not about the December signings that will decide whether SAP's momentum carries into next year.

January 28 is the next reckoning

SAP will publish preliminary fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on January 28, 2027. Cloud backlog growth will be the number investors zero in on. The distinction that matters is between a slower rate of expansion and genuine operational weakness; so far, SAP has signaled only the former, while its latest results show growth that remains brisk. How that tension resolves will determine how the year-end quarter is judged.
