ServiceNow's AI Pitch Gets Real: Keysight's 40% Speed Gain and the NBA Deal Matter More Than the Hype

ServiceNow spent the past week stacking up evidence that its artificial intelligence push is translating into tangible workplace gains — a pitch that lands at an awkward moment, with investors still nursing wounds from a contract outlook that fell short of expectations.

The company's stock took a record single-day hit on October 29 after management guided to 18.5% constant-currency growth in remaining performance obligations (cRPO) for the near term, below the 19.8% analysts had penciled in. Adjusted profit also missed. Reuters, which reported the record daily loss, framed the reaction against wider anxiety about AI-driven disruption across the software sector.

Yet the operational picture that emerged during the week tells a more nuanced story. ServiceNow beat its revenue outlook and raised forecasts for subscription revenue and free cash flow margin — a counterweight that makes a blanket bearish read look too blunt.

Where the AI promise turns into a number

The most concrete data point came Thursday, when ServiceNow said Keysight Technologies sales staff now build quotes 40% faster using its CRM and CPQ tools. The time spent setting up and maintaining configurations dropped by 50% to 80%, according to the company.

That kind of figure is what an investment case can actually be built on — provided similar improvements repeat across other customers. If they do, ServiceNow can lean harder on real-world client results rather than product demos when making its sales pitch.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

The NBA offers a second test case. On Wednesday the league extended its partnership with ServiceNow and plans to deploy EmployeeWorks for onboarding new staff and handling internal workplace requests. The value here hinges on execution: whether employees fold the tools into daily routines and whether the organization extracts lasting benefit. A slick demonstration matters far less than whether the software sticks.

HR tools enter controlled release

Also on Wednesday, ServiceNow unveiled its HR Service Delivery Productivity Assistants, including a Hiring Assistant designed to bundle tasks from job requisition through offer into a single conversation. The assistants are in controlled availability, and talent data from Findem underpins both the Hiring Assistant and the Talent Insights Assistant.

That limited rollout is a deliberate boundary. The HR assistants could widen ServiceNow's AI footprint if their usefulness holds up in practice. For tools aimed at HR leaders, the link between solid underlying data and a specific task is what counts — and with Findem, ServiceNow has named its data partner.

Cost discipline meets commercial ambition

The picture grew more complicated Friday, when a fresh round of layoffs came to light. According to media reports, the cuts affect staff in the UK, the US and India. ServiceNow said it is managing headcount with discipline.

Cost control is defensible if it protects delivery of the products and partnerships already announced. That is precisely where the company can offer something economically tangible against disappointed expectations.

On October 28, ServiceNow also widened its OpenAI partnership and joined the Control Tower Alliance, encompassing a ServiceNow plugin for ChatGPT plus planned integrations for security, development and AI governance. The same day, it reported third-quarter 2026 subscription revenue of $3,988 million, up 21% year over year.

ServiceNow at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

It also lifted its AI target for 2026 annualized contract value to $1.7 billion — a goal that now serves as the yardstick against which the commercial rollout will be judged.

The bar is set by contracts, not announcements

For investors, the disappointment of late October explains the skepticism better than a broad debate about AI. The question is how much future business ServiceNow has already locked in and how much earning power that book can generate. A softer contract outlook weighs heavily when profit disappoints at the same time.

Measurable customer benefit — Keysight's faster quotes, the NBA's planned rollout, the HR assistants' additional use cases — gives the strategy substance. But that substance only becomes convincing when customer value and contract growth carry the story together. Until then, the next announcement deserves less attention than the numbers already on the table.
