Shell has given investors a glimpse of a sharply improved third quarter, with the oil major guiding toward an indicative refining margin of $42 per barrel — a dramatic step up from the $24/bbl recorded in the prior three-month period. The company released the preliminary figures on Wednesday, and the market responded immediately.

By Thursday's close, Shell shares had climbed 3.2% to EUR 44.66, leaving the stock just 0.3% shy of its 52-week high. Intraday trading in London had earlier shown gains of as much as 3.6%, according to Reuters, with the stock changing hands at EUR 44.67 at one point as crude prices surged on renewed supply concerns.

Supply Squeeze Lifts Fuel Prices Across the Board

The margin expansion reflects a global product market that has tightened considerably. A combination of shipping disruptions, geopolitical friction in the Middle East, unplanned outages and attacks on processing facilities has curtailed worldwide supplies of refined products. Brent crude has firmed, but product prices have outpaced it — European diesel jumped more than 10% in a single week to reach $197 per barrel.

Speaking at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London, Shell CEO Wael Sawan noted that oil flows from the Middle East have recovered to roughly 80% of pre-war levels, though the rebound remains incomplete. The company also cautioned that diesel and gasoline shortages could persist, partly because refiners had temporarily shifted their output slates toward jet fuel.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?

Storm Forces Gulf of Mexico Shutdowns

While refining economics have strengthened, Shell is simultaneously managing weather-driven disruptions in the US Gulf of Mexico. As Hurricane Isaias approached, the company evacuated personnel from five production platforms — Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox — and suspended output there. Across the region, more than 60% of US offshore oil production had been taken offline.

Elsewhere, Shell is working to restore normal operations. The Pearl facility in the Middle East is being brought back into partial service, allowing for some inventory rebuilding. Repair work on Train 2 at the Qatari complex is expected to wrap up in the first quarter of 2027.

Gas Guidance Raised as LNG Remains a Pillar

The improved downstream outlook is accompanied by a brighter picture in gas. Management lifted its production forecast for the Integrated Gas segment and said it expects LNG volumes of between 7.2 and 7.6 million tonnes for the quarter. Liquefied natural gas continues to serve as a central driver of Shell's operational performance.

Headwinds and the Road Ahead

Not everything points upward. Shell flagged a roughly $2.5 billion cash outflow in the third quarter tied to the timing of payments for German emissions allowances under the national fuel emissions trading scheme. Exploration write-offs of about $0.3 billion are also expected, alongside lower adjusted earnings in the marketing division.

Meanwhile, the company's share buyback programme remains in motion. Shell disclosed purchases of 925,000 shares on the London exchange and 475,000 on XAMS on Tuesday as part of its existing cancellation programme. Investors will get the full picture on 29 October 2026, when Shell publishes its complete third-quarter results.
