Siemens Clinches IDC Leadership Nod in Life Sciences as Rail Deals and MERMEC Close Fill a Busy Week
Published on 11/07/2026 at 15:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deSiemens packed a fortnight of dealmaking, brand restructuring and analyst scrutiny into the run-up to its quarterly report, even as a broad retreat in AI and semiconductor names dragged the stock lower.
Shares in the Munich-based industrial group fell 2.9% yesterday, closing at €262.35, as a worldwide selloff in artificial-intelligence and chip stocks spilled over into the German market. Reporting cited by tagesschau pointed to the rout on Wall Street and mounting doubts about the returns on multibillion-dollar AI spending as the trigger for the selling pressure in Germany. Media reports also flagged worries over future AI investment and a potentially slower build-out of data centres following the US midterm elections.
IDC crowns Siemens a life-sciences leader
On the technology front, IDC named Siemens a leading provider in its MarketScape 2026 assessment of life-sciences research and development and consulting services. Siemens said the recognition reflected work in which it and Atos helped GSK cut physical experiments by 25%.
Rail infrastructure was the other engine of the week. Siemens Mobility opened a new technology and innovation centre for rail infrastructure in Chippenham, an investment the company puts at €115 million and says will safeguard 800 local jobs. The unit also signed a letter of intent with Lufthansa Technik Defense on Tuesday to jointly plan a rail-based patient transport system, designed for military evacuations as well as civilian disaster relief.

MERMEC acquisition wrapped up
The company had already completed its purchase of key core businesses from the MERMEC Group on Wednesday, after receiving the necessary approvals. Those acquired operations generated roughly €430 million in revenue in fiscal 2025 and employed about 1,700 people, according to Siemens.
Analysts remain on the fence. Deutsche Bank Research kept Siemens at "Hold" with a €270 price target yesterday, with analyst Gael de-Bray pointing to mixed signals from competitors in automation while describing the order trend in Siemens' electrification business as still strong.
Healthineers to stand on its own name
Siemens also announced on Thursday that Siemens Healthineers will operate under the Healthineers brand going forward. The rebranding is set to begin in 2027 and run for three years.
