Siemens Healthineers Exits Routine Ultrasound to Chase Higher-Margin Surgical Imaging

Siemens Healthineers halts worldwide sales of mainstream ultrasound lines, redirecting R&D to interventional imaging as buybacks continue.

Siemens Healthineers has pulled the plug on worldwide sales of its mainstream ultrasound lines, a strategic retreat from a crowded, price-driven market that the German medtech group now regards as a drag on profitability. The decision, confirmed Monday, retires established general-imaging families including Acuson Sequoia, Redwood, Juniper and Maple from the sales catalogue.

Rather than chase volume in routine diagnostic hardware, management is redirecting research and development spending toward interventional imaging and image-guided therapies — the high-precision systems that steer surgeons and interventional radiologists through complex procedures. Those products, the company argues, carry steeper barriers to entry and more dependable returns than mobile scanners destined for physicians' offices and general hospitals.

A €600 Million Slice of Precision Therapy

The financial stakes are far from trivial. Reuters reports that ultrasound generated roughly EUR 600 million in revenue within the Precision Therapy division during fiscal 2025. Walking away from the mass market means surrendering part of that top line, but the trade-off is deliberate: a leaner, better-quality margin profile for the unit.

Existing customers will see little disruption day to day. Service and technical support for the installed base continue without interruption, even as the product portfolio narrows sharply from broad routine solutions to specialised minimally invasive equipment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Healthineers?

Buyback Momentum Keeps Rolling

While the operating model shifts, the company's capital return machine has not slowed. Under a repurchase programme launched on 1 June, Siemens Healthineers bought back another 49,987 of its own shares between 5 and 11 October. The prior week, covering 28 September to 4 October, saw an identical 49,987 shares taken off the market.

Those steady transactions shrink the number of freely traded shares and signal ongoing capital discipline as the group sharpens its operational focus.

Vienna Congress Spotlights Molecular Imaging

A high-profile industry appearance is also on the near-term calendar. From 17 to 21 October, Siemens Healthineers will showcase its molecular imaging innovations at the EANM 2026 congress in Vienna — a platform that reinforces the push toward highly specialised clinical applications.

The sector's talent market, meanwhile, logged its own movement. Former Siemens Healthineers executive Felicia Kurz moved to Medtronic in early October to head its cardiac ablation solutions business.

Market Awaits 5 November Verdict

Investors will get the full financial picture of the restructuring — and the outlook beyond it — in a matter of weeks. The balance-sheet press conference and fourth-quarter results are scheduled for 5 November, accompanied by a detailed analyst call.

The stock changed hands at EUR 40.27 on the day of the ultrasound announcement, a gain of 0.7%. That level sits 3.7% above the 50-day moving average of EUR 38.85. In pre-market trading elsewhere, the shares were quoted at EUR 39.72, following a prior close of EUR 39.99, leaving the year-to-date decline at 12%.
