Silver's midweek surge came with a built-in caveat. The metal closed at USD 52.24 per troy ounce on Wednesday, up 4.9% on the day, as a softer US dollar and falling Treasury yields gave the non-yielding asset a firm push. Yet the rally answers none of the questions that matter beyond the next session — and the calendar is about to supply a fresh one.

Payrolls Take Center Stage

The US Labor Department releases October employment data on Friday, November 6, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. The report lands with the Federal Reserve's policy path still unsettled and could shift the rate expectations that already helped shape Wednesday's move.

Market participants also read reported Democratic gains in the US midterm elections as a possible signal of political gridlock and less fiscal expansion — a factor that added to the tailwind. Even so, lingering expectations of further Fed tightening form a counterweight. That makes Friday's release more than another economic datapoint: it could move the very rate expectations that underpinned the rebound.

The prospect of a possible Fed rate hike in December is not a decided step but a risk scenario, and that distinction matters when sizing up the recovery. Wednesday's advance does not refute the rate concerns.

China's Output Picture Is Mixed

Supply-side news offers no clean relief either. According to media reports from Tuesday, China's production of 1# silver bars fell 5.03% in October from September. The drop was attributed mainly to production halts at recycling operations during the National Day holidays and maintenance shutdowns at copper smelters.

Chinese smelters expect further maintenance stoppages at some copper plants in November and December. At the same time, silver bar output at lead-zinc smelters has been recovering since September, so October's decline sits alongside diverging trends within Chinese production. Cumulative output in 2026 reached about 16,000 tonnes, 3.72% above the year-earlier period — meaning the weaker October does not translate into an annual decline on a cumulative basis.

Deficit Forecasts Versus Demand Risks

The fundamental backdrop is no clearer. The Silver Institute expects a global silver supply deficit of 46.3 million ounces in 2026, which would mark a sixth consecutive deficit year. A gap of that size does not amount to an immediately effective shortage, however: according to media reports, existing inventories could bridge the missing supply. What matters is not only whether demand outruns current output, but how far stockpiles absorb the difference.

On the consumption side, the institute projects a 3% decline in industrial silver demand for 2026, citing weaker demand from the solar sector as the main reason. The deficit forecast alone therefore does not explain where the price heads in the short term.

A Mixed Picture for Investors

Weaker industrial demand and the retreat of speculative investors have also been cited as drags, setting the tense supply balance against a softening demand side. For investors, the takeaway is a split screen: fresh support from the dollar and bond yields on one side, unresolved rate risks on the other, with the anticipated deficit offering no guarantee of higher prices.

The bar for a durable recovery is therefore wider than a single day's move. Rate expectations, industrial demand and the availability of existing stockpiles all need to be weighed together — and Friday's payrolls report will be the next concrete test of how much of Wednesday's gain the market can keep.
