Silver's Supply Signal Is Clearer Than Its Price Signal

Metals Focus forecasts a 37.3 million ounce silver surplus for 2027 as COMEX and London stocks rise while China's social stock falls and San Dimas stays shut.

A single front-month print of 57.23 USD per troy ounce on COMEX, settled Monday, tells traders where silver is priced. It says nothing about whether the metal is actually scarce. That gap between price and physical reality sits at the heart of the current silver debate, and the latest round of data offers no clean answer.

Metals Focus pushed the conversation onto a longer horizon, forecasting a 37.3 million ounce surplus for 2027. The consultancy sees the market flipping from deficit to surplus next year. That is a projection rather than a surplus already sitting in vaults, but it reframes the question: mine-level disruptions matter only insofar as they alter the aggregate balance, and scattered production reports cannot yet make that case.

Vaults Tell Different Stories in Different Places

Friday's daily CME Group inventory report showed 334.87 million troy ounces of silver in COMEX depositories, of which 103.12 million ounces sat in the "registered" category. Total holdings and registered stock are distinct measures, and neither figure on its own reveals whether metal is flowing in or draining out. A snapshot of quantity at a moment in time cannot establish tightening or loosening — that requires a comparison, and it cannot be equated with metal immediately available to the market.

London moved in one direction. The LBMA reported on October 14 a London silver stock of 28,985 tonnes for September, up 1.95% from the prior month. The organization is explicit that it publishes total holdings, not free float.

China moved the other way. Media reports put the country's social silver stock at 3,909 tonnes in the week through Thursday, a decline of 25 tonnes. The same assessment described actual buying activity as weak despite lower prices. Inventories at the Shanghai Gold Exchange and warrant holdings at the Shanghai Futures Exchange were also reported lower. Falling stockpiles paired with soft purchasing undercuts the simple reading that outflows automatically signal robust demand and price support. The two regional datasets cover different locations and different inventory categories, so they can be read side by side but not fused into a single verdict on global supply.

San Dimas Still Offline

On the production side, the strike at Mexico's San Dimas mine remained unresolved as of Monday, with silver and gold output halted. First Majestic gave no restart date. Quarterly production at the operation came in at 859,869 ounces of silver, 41% below the year-earlier figure, and the company cited twelve lost operating days.

Silvercorp separately reported a sharp output decline in the Ying district, attributing it to safety work and suspended operations at the GC mine, among other factors. These are concrete company-level setbacks. They do not substitute for a market-wide forecast, and the key question is whether the interruptions prove temporary or undermine the expected easing of the balance.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Two Clocks Running

Monetary policy remains the other variable, with the Federal Reserve's next rate decision scheduled for October 28. For silver, the short and long horizons are pulling in opposite directions: operational stoppages pinch near-term supply while Metals Focus projects a surplus for the coming year. A restart date for San Dimas would be the first hard clue as to which force wins. Until then, inventory data answer only part of the question — how holdings and purchases are evolving — leaving the direction of US monetary policy as the second, still-open half.
