Silver's physical market is loosening just as the macroeconomic backdrop turns hostile, and the combination is proving too heavy for the metal to carry. The spot price fell 6.6% on the day to $48.98 per troy ounce, with a closing print of $49.64 reflecting a 5.3% decline — a slide that has left the much-vaunted supply deficit story struggling to find buyers.

London's stockpiles swell to a four-year high

Metals Focus reported that London silver inventories stood at 932 million ounces at the end of September, the highest level in nearly four years. Strip out metal held in physically backed exchange-traded products and roughly 267 million ounces were available for trading — almost double the trough recorded in October 2025.

That distinction matters. Total vault holdings do not automatically translate into metal available to the market, since silver locked inside investment products and freely tradeable stock serve different purposes. Even so, the figures point to an easing of physical tightness.

Reinforcing the trend, data published yesterday showed global holdings in silver-backed ETPs have fallen by around 60 million ounces since the start of the year. Metal that was previously tied up has flowed back onto the physical market — meaning investor outflows do more than dent sentiment; they release supply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

From deficit to surplus?

Metals Focus now sees a possible shift in the silver market from deficit to surplus in 2027, citing higher inventories alongside weaker jewellery demand and fading industrial consumption. The outlook therefore hinges on more than the future path of investment flows — demand for fabrication could offer less support as well. Any surplus remains a forecast, not an accomplished fact.

For now, the arithmetic still points the other way. The annual outlook published yesterday by the Silver Institute and Metals Focus projects a supply deficit of 46.3 million ounces for 2026. Worldwide silver demand is expected to fall by about 2%, with industrial fabrication down 3%, largely on weaker photovoltaic demand.

Rates and oil turn the screw

The macro picture has compounded the pressure. According to Reuters, stronger-than-expected US inflation data for September and rising oil prices weighed on silver by reinforcing expectations of another Federal Reserve rate increase. US GDP grew at an annualised 3.4%, while PCE inflation ran at 3.6% year on year in September.

For a non-yielding asset like silver, rising rate expectations are a clear headwind, and the prospect of a longer stretch of restrictive policy makes any recovery harder — even with a physical deficit still on the cards for the year. Dissent within the Fed has added to the uncertainty: Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack both voted for a hike, and market reports link those signals to expectations of a possible December move.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Data on the horizon

Two forces are converging on investors: rate anxiety in the macro sphere and softer demand in the silver market itself. The projected deficit alone offers no dependable basis for a price turn when more metal is available and investors are asking for less.

Near-term direction will likely be set by a run of US releases. According to CME Group, the ISM purchasing managers' index lands on 2 November 2026, the US employment report on 6 November 2026 and the US inflation report on 10 November 2026. Whether those prints confirm or soften expectations of further tightening is the question that matters most.
