SK Hynix has confirmed it is developing its own 4F² DRAM cell architecture, a disclosure made to Aju Press that lands barely a week after Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) touted progress on a comparable design. The Korean chipmaker's acknowledgement puts the two companies on the same technical road map — at least on paper.

Shrinking DRAM cells to a 4F² layout is widely seen as a meaningful step toward packing more memory capacity onto a limited wafer area. Specialists, though, are urging restraint. Aju Press stressed that a working prototype says nothing about whether a manufacturer can achieve economic yields, and even less about commercial competitiveness at mass-market scale. Established memory makers face stiff physical and process-engineering obstacles in moving to such dense structures; beyond yield rates, thermal behavior, signal stability and power efficiency ultimately determine whether a chip is fit for modern data centers.

Citi: Mass Output Unlikely Before 2028

The jitters that swept through memory stocks earlier in the week traced back to remarks by CXMT president Cao Kanyu at a conference in Shanghai. Cao said the company had made headway on a novel 4F² DRAM cell architecture and was targeting the launch of a DDR5-RDIMM server module by year-end. Fears of fresh price and competitive pressure in DRAM followed quickly.

Citi's analysts, however, see the real-world impact on global memory supply as limited. Mass production built on that architecture is unlikely before 2028, they argue, and CXMT remains four generations behind the world's leading DRAM manufacturers. On that reading, anxiety about an imminent glut in high-performance memory is misplaced.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

A Bruising Week, and a Lone Voice of Caution

The nervousness still left its mark. SK Hynix shares fell more than 10% in Seoul trading on Tuesday, a slide Reuters tied to the Chinese advance as well as unease over artificial-intelligence capital spending. Broadcom chief Hock Tan added fuel by likening a chunk of AI-sector outlay to gambling in a casino. Elon Musk weighed in on Wednesday, calling the pricing practices of unnamed memory chipmakers extortionate — and Seoul Economic Daily drew SK Hynix into that conversation. Rosenblatt analyst Kevin Cassidy nevertheless called the memory selloff overdone on Wednesday and stood by his buy recommendation.

Over a seven-day stretch the stock gave up 24%. By Friday's close it had found some footing at 1,272,000.00 KRW, a modest gain of 0.8% on the day, though the shares remain 57% below their 52-week high.

Earnings in Focus as HBM Tightness Lifts Forecasts

Attention is swinging back to demand fundamentals, particularly in AI. Analyst Han Dong-hee of SK Securities said yesterday that profit estimates for next year are being revised upward on a deepening memory shortage and rising prices for High Bandwidth Memory. SK Hynix has scheduled a conference call on third-quarter 2026 results for 28 October at 9:00 Seoul time, according to a mandatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission; financial circles have also floated 27 and 28 October as dates.

Alongside the earnings countdown, the company is pressing ahead with its product portfolio. At the OCP Global Summit it showcased the MARS architecture and a second-generation CXL-3.2 memory module with 256 gigabytes of capacity. SK Hynix says the module delivers more than double the bandwidth and roughly 30% better energy efficiency than its predecessor — a reminder to would-be challengers of the technological lead it intends to defend.
