SK Hynix Faces a Sharper Test as Rates, Competition and New Tech Collide
Published on 10/15/2026 at 09:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix found itself under pressure on two very different fronts this week: a market-driven sell-off in memory stocks and a fresh reminder that the company is still trying to stay ahead technologically. On Thursday, the shares at one point fell 11 percent to 1,261,000.00 KRW, while elsewhere in the week the stock was quoted at 1,419,000.00 KRW, down 1.7 percent on the day and 18 percent over the previous seven sessions.
The immediate backdrop was a broader reset in appetite for technology hardware. Rising yields, especially as the 10-year US Treasury rate pushes above 5 percent, are forcing investors to reassess the cost of funding long-dated artificial intelligence projects. Reuters reported that SK Hynix suffered losses of more than ten percent in a single session during the sector-wide reaction, after concerns over AI spending and reports about rival ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, rattled the market.
Yet the demand story has not gone away. Media reports continue to point to resilient underlying needs for computing power tied to artificial intelligence, leaving investors caught between short-term valuation pressure and a still-intact demand cycle. That tension is especially visible in memory, where sentiment can turn faster than the fundamentals.
At the same time, SK Hynix is pushing ahead with its own technology pipeline. The company unveiled research on analog compute-in-memory based on 3D FeNAND, saying the approach could deliver 10- to 20-times higher throughput than conventional 3D NAND and improve energy efficiency by 4,000 to 5,000 times. On top of that, chief development officer Ahn Hyun outlined a broader roadmap at SEDEX 2026 that includes high bandwidth memory, 3D-stacked DRAM, high-bandwidth flash, CXL-based memory pooling and concepts grouped under Storage-Next.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Competition is another source of noise, but not all analysts see it as an immediate threat. Citi said today that CXMT’s planned 4F² DRAM should be manageable for the global market, arguing that any impact on supply would be limited. The bank said volume production at CXMT is not expected before 2028 and that the Chinese company remains several generations behind the leading DRAM makers. SK Hynix, meanwhile, is also working on similar memory cell architectures to shore up its position.
Beyond the chip roadmap, the company is also navigating a complex industrial and geopolitical map. Reuters said SK Hynix is seeking US approval to install additional US-made equipment at Solidigm’s plant in Dalian, China, where the unit wants to use unused space for NAND production. The plan is tied to SK Hynix’s own efforts to build a manufacturing base in the United States.
The group’s domestic expansion plans are moving too. Chey Tae-won, chairman of the SK Group, said last Friday that factories at the planned semiconductor hub in Gwangju should be built as quickly as possible, citing expectations for sustained rapid growth in global chip demand.
Investor focus is also returning to valuation calls. Meritz Securities reiterated a buy recommendation on Monday and raised its target price to 3.2 million Won. The brokerage expects operating profit of 80.1 trillion Won for the third quarter of 2026. SK Hynix has scheduled its third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call for October 28, 2026.
Corporate finance at the holding-company level added another layer of interest. On Wednesday, Chey Tae-won agreed to sell a 1.34 percent stake in the parent company, SK Inc., for 544 billion Won to an investment fund linked to Michael Dell. The deal does not directly affect SK Hynix’s operations or capital structure, but it underscores the ties between global technology capital and the South Korean conglomerate.
Despite the recent pullback, SK Hynix remains up 94 percent since the start of the year. For now, the stock’s move is less a verdict on the business than a reminder that even one of the core suppliers of the AI era is vulnerable when borrowing costs rise and the market turns skittish.
