SK Hynix shares climbed on Thursday, rising 3.8% as the stock rode a broader recovery in South Korean equities led by chipmakers. Robust October semiconductor export data and sustained buying from institutional investors underpinned the mood, according to media reports. One analyst also pointed to the company's share buyback as an additional prop for the stock.

The advance sits within a sector-wide rebound rather than a fresh corporate announcement. The export figures provide a positive industry impulse, but they are not news from SK Hynix itself. Company-specific support comes instead from the record results published on Wednesday and the shareholder returns announced alongside them.

Record Quarter and a 100 Trillion Won Payout Plan

For the third quarter of 2026, SK Hynix reported revenue of 104.6155 trillion won, operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won and net profit of 39.7756 trillion won. Management attributed the performance to stronger demand for AI memory and higher prices.

The shareholder return plan unveiled on Wednesday covers roughly 100 trillion won for the year. At least 30 trillion won of that is earmarked for cash dividends, with at least 60 trillion won allocated to buybacks and share cancellations. The distinction between announcement and execution matters: the plan sets out intended capital returns, not distributions already completed. For today's market reaction, the buyback is the component acting as a support.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Two separate forces are therefore converging for investors. Export trends shore up confidence in the sector, while the quarterly figures demonstrate that stronger demand and higher prices have fed through to the business. The buyback adds a direct capital-return measure on top of that operating performance.

Long-Term Contracts Cover More Than Half of 2027–28 Capacity

Alongside the numbers, SK Hynix pointed to the durability of demand. Long-term customer agreements cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027–2028, according to the company. Those contracts provide a framework for future utilisation.

Management also said memory supply shortages could persist until 2030 — an assessment of how the market may develop rather than a settled outcome. It nonetheless reinforces why the record results matter to investors beyond the quarter just closed. On the product front, SK Hynix expects HBM4 to overtake HBM3E in both shipments and revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026, tying its outlook to a concrete shift within its portfolio.

Analysts Split on Price Targets, Not on Direction

Thursday brought a mixed set of analyst actions. IBK Investment & Securities kept its buy rating but cut its price target to 3.2 million won from 4 million won, citing the gap between the share price and estimated intrinsic value — not concerns about conditions in the memory market. Hana Securities held its target at 3.6 million won the same day while raising its operating profit forecast for next year.

Cantor Fitzgerald had lowered its target for SK Hynix to $250 from $300 on 26 October, while retaining its "Overweight" rating. The combined signal is hardly uniformly negative: IBK's lower target concerns valuation, Hana lifted its earnings estimate, and Cantor paired a reduced target with a continued positive recommendation.

Solidigm Listing Review Called Off

One corporate decision rounds out the picture. On 23 October, SK Hynix ended its review of possible pre-IPO and listing options for subsidiary Solidigm, citing capital market conditions and the interests of SK Hynix and existing shareholders. Today's market recovery does nothing to reopen that closed review process.

Taken together, the company-specific case rests on the record results, the long-term customer agreements and the announced capital returns. The cheerier industry backdrop is doing the rest.
