SK Hynix has told investors it is weighing fresh steps to reward shareholders, but nothing has been signed off. The company said on Friday that additional measures will be unveiled on October 28 alongside its third-quarter 2026 results, following a board resolution. That leaves a reported special dividend of roughly 16 trillion won — first floated by Dong-A Ilbo and tied to gains from the company's stake in Kioxia — firmly in the realm of speculation. SK Hynix has confirmed neither the amount nor any distribution plan built around it.

The distinction matters. An announced intention to communicate is not a declared payment, and anyone treating the October date as a locked-in cash return is getting ahead of the paperwork. What the company has actually settled is the timing of its next disclosure, not the shape of its capital returns.

One Buyback Is Done; the Next Move Is Not

For a concrete yardstick, look to what has already been executed. SK Hynix closed its share buyback early on Wednesday, repurchasing 24.07 million shares for cancellation, according to media reports. That programme is finished. The extra shareholder measures remain under review — two separate pieces of capital allocation at very different stages of decision. A potential special dividend would sit on top of the completed buyback, not inside it.

Solidigm's Listing Review Hits the Pause Button

Funding needs elsewhere have not gone away. On Friday, SK Hynix said Solidigm had halted its review of a possible pre-IPO financing round and a US listing, citing capital-market conditions and the share price. The company still sees investment requirements for Solidigm's growth and will keep examining alternative options.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Production planning is moving too. Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter, that SK Hynix may convert its Dalian plant from 192-layer NAND products to ones with at least 240 layers.

Washington, Equipment and a US Fab

Investment decisions here are not purely a question of available cash. A Reuters report dated October 14, based on two people with knowledge of the situation, said SK Hynix sought Washington's approval for additional shipments of American chipmaking equipment to China — a request it linked to plans for a factory on US soil. Access to equipment that requires export licences is therefore part of the equation, and a large payout on its own would be an incomplete gauge of the company's financial priorities.

Memory Roadmap Adds Another Claim on Capital

Technology is a further draw on the same purse. At the OCP Global Summit on October 16, SK Hynix laid out its vision for AI infrastructure and new memory technologies, including the memory-centric MARS system and High Bandwidth Flash. A second-generation CXL memory product was presented with 256 gigabytes of capacity and roughly 30% better energy efficiency than its predecessor.

Set the product roadmap beside the fab plans and Solidigm's growth funding, and the October 28 announcement becomes one input among several. The size of any payout will draw the headlines; how SK Hynix balances rewards to shareholders against the financing of its next phase will say more about where the stock goes from here.
